Estonia to expel Russia’s ambassador in retaliation

Estonia
  • Tensions between Russia and its European neighbors have increased.
  • Estonia announced to expel of the Russian ambassador from Tallinn.
  • Russian ambassador will depart at the same time as his Estonian counterpart.

TALLINN: In retaliation for Moscow’s expulsion of the Estonian ambassador, Estonia announced on Monday that it would expel the Russian ambassador from Tallinn.

Since Moscow invaded Ukraine last year, tensions between Russia and its European neighbors have increased.

“We stand by the principle of parity in relations with Russia,” the Estonian ministry of foreign affairs said in a tweet sent in English, adding that the Russian ambassador would have to depart at the same time as his Estonian counterpart, ordered by Moscow to leave on February 7.

In a statement issued on Monday, Russia’s foreign ministry said it had downgraded diplomatic relations with Estonia, accusing the Baltic country of “total Russophobia.”

According to a statement from Moscow, the measures come after Estonia drastically reduced staff levels at Russia’s embassy in Tallinn.

“Russia’s steps will not deter us from providing continued support to Ukraine,” Estonian Foreign Minister Urmas Reinsalu said in a tweet following a tit-for-tat response from Tallin.

Russian Warship to Join Drills With navies of China, South Africa

China
  • The missiles travel at nine times the speed of sound.
  • The missiles have a range of more than 1,000 km (620 miles).
  • The exercise will be the second involving the three South African countries.

A Russian warship armed with new-generation hypersonic cruise weaponry will take part in joint exercises with the navies of China and South Africa in February.

It was the first public mention of the frigate “Admiral of the Fleet of the Soviet Union Gorshkov,” which is armed with Zircon missiles, taking part.

According to Russia, the missiles travel at nine times the speed of sound and have a range of more than 1,000 km (620 miles). They are the centerpiece of its hypersonic arsenal, along with the Avangard glide vehicle, which entered combat service in 2019.

“‘Admiral Gorshkov’… will go to the logistic support point in Tartus, Syria, and then participate in joint naval exercises with the Chinese and South African navies.”

The South African National Defense Force said on Thursday that the drills, which will take place near the port cities of Durban and Richards Bay from February 17 to 27, aim to “strengthen the already flourishing relations between South Africa, Russia, and China.”

The exercise will be the second involving the three South African countries, following a drill in 2019, according to the defense force.

This month, the “Gorshkov” conducted training in the Norwegian Sea after President Vladimir Putin dispatched it to the Atlantic Ocean to send a message to the West that Russia would not back down in the Ukraine conflict.

China, Russia, and the United States are racing to develop hypersonic weapons, which are seen as a way to gain an advantage over any adversary due to their faster-than-sound speeds and difficulty in detection.

France will increase defence spending by a third

defence
  • Emmanuel Macron to increase France’s defence budget by one-third over the next seven years.
  • France is intending to increase its air defences by 50%.
  • The new defensc bill for 2024-2030 hoped to boost military equipment production.

Following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine last year, President Emmanuel Macron announced plans on Friday to increase France‘s defence budget by one-third over the next seven years.

The announcement came a day after more than a million people protested in France against a proposed reform to reduce pension deficits.

Macron stated that he would ask parliament to approve a new budget of more than €400 billion ($430 billion) for 2024-2030, an increase from €295 billion for 2019-2025.

“After we repair the armed forces, we will transform them,” he told soldiers at the Mont-de-Marsan air base in the southwest.

“We must do better and in a different way,” Macron added.

We must “prioritize rapid action and increasing power because we will not be able to choose the conflicts we will have to fight.”

Macron also stated that the budget for military intelligence would be increased by 60% for the same period and that the country’s ability to respond to major cyberattacks would be doubled.

The presidency also stated that France intended to increase its air defences by 50%.

According to Elysee, the new defence bill for 2024-2030 hoped to boost military equipment production “to respond to the needs of the armed forces” but also “to the expectations of a partner” like Ukraine.

Paris has increased defence spending in recent years, but its military capabilities have come under scrutiny since Russia invaded pro-western Ukraine in February last year.

France has delivered weapons to Ukraine at a lower rate

It has supplied weaponry such as the Caesar howitzer artillery system and established a €200 million fund for Ukraine to purchase equipment directly from French manufacturers.

It has also promised to hand over highly mobile AMX-10 RC light tanks, which are wheeled rather than tracked and have a tank-like cannon.

The French presidency has stated that France’s needs are not the same as Ukraine’s.

“France is not Ukraine. It does not share the same security concerns and does not share a border with Russia “It has stated.

“We have nuclear weapons and are members of the European Union and NATO.”
