The leader of the UN’s nuclear watchdog expressed concern on Thursday that people were growing complacent about the significant risks presented by the Russian-controlled Zaporizhzhia nuclear reactor in Ukraine.
The largest plant in Europe was taken over by Russian soldiers in March, and since then, it has been constantly attacked, causing fears of a nuclear meltdown. The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) director general, Rafael Grossi, is attempting to create a safe zone surrounding the plant.
Speaking to reporters in Kyiv, the capital of Ukraine, Grossi warned that a nuclear disaster might occur at any time and reaffirmed how dangerous the situation at the plant was.
“I worry that this is becoming routine, that people may believe that nothing has happened so far, so is the director general of the IAEA crying wolf?” he said when addressing reporters during a visit to Ukraine.
“It (an accident) can happen any time and my duty is to do everything I can to prevent that from happening.”
According to the IAEA, up to four of its experts are stationed permanently in Zaporizhzhia. Prior to visiting Moscow to meet with Russian officials, Grossi spoke.
