Ukraine is offered modern drones by a US company for $1

Ukraine
  • The US government allowed the sale of two drones to Ukraine for just $1.
  • Ukraine has received a number of tiny attack and surveillance drones from the US military.
  • The business has volunteered to educate Ukrainian operators.

WASHINGTON: Leading US manufacturer of cutting-edge military surveillance drones made an announcement and urged the US government to allow the sale of two drones to Ukraine for just $1.

The powerful Grey Eagle and Reaper drones, which US forces have used to great effect in surveillance and targeted attacks over Afghanistan, Syria, Iraq, and other conflict zones, are being withheld from Ukraine, according to General Atomic Aeronautical Systems, which claims it has been pleading with Washington to give them to Ukraine for months.

It claimed that one of the most glaringly evident, force-improving technology Ukraine needs in its conflict with Russian forces is the drone, which can go great distances at medium heights.

Ukraine has received a number of tiny attack and surveillance drones from the US military, but none with the sophisticated engineering and long-range capabilities of General Atomic’s unmanned aircraft.

General Atomics CEO Linden Blue said in a statement that “from the outset of the Russian invasion, we began exploring for possibilities to react to the needs of Ukrainian forces with our equipment, including the MQ-9 Reaper and MQ-1C Gray Eagle.”

Educate Ukrainian operators without charging

According to him, the business has volunteered to educate Ukrainian operators without charging the US or Ukrainian governments anything.

And for a symbolic $1, the corporation was prepared to donate two of its own training planes as well as a ground control center and other equipment.

According to him, the cost of preparing and transporting the aircraft as well as setting up the operation to launch them over the battlefield would be borne by Ukraine or another party.

“The offer is a remarkable deal with no strings attached,” Blue said.

“All that is required is approval from the US government.”

“From our perspective, it is long past time to enable Ukrainian forces with the information dominance required to win this war,” he said

Japan and NATO vow a strong response to China, Russia’s threats

Japan
  • Stoltenberg and Kishida expressed concern about the growing cooperation between China and Russia.
  • Tokyo, along with its G7 partners, has imposed sanctions on Moscow.
  • Stoltenberg pushed South Korea the day before in Seoul to provide military help for Ukraine.

TOKYO – Jens Stoltenberg, Secretary-General of NATO, said Tuesday in Tokyo that Japan and NATO must “stay unified and firm” in the face of security threats posed by China, North Korea, and Russia’s war in Ukraine.

Stoltenberg, secretary general of the European and North American military alliance, cautioned that Beijing was keeping a close eye on developments in Ukraine and “learning lessons that may affect its future decisions”.

He spoke with Japan’s Prime Minister Fumio Kishida during talks as part of Stoltenberg’s journey to Asia to strengthen connections with democratic allies.

“What is happening in Europe today could happen in East Asia tomorrow. So we must remain united and firm, standing together for freedom and democracy,” he said.

Stoltenberg and Kishida expressed concern about the growing cooperation between China and Russia.

“We highlight with concern Russia’s growing military cooperation with China, including through joint operations and drills in the vicinity of Japan,” they said in a joint statement.

Stoltenberg had pushed South Korea the day before in Seoul to provide military help for Ukraine, which was invaded by its neighbor Russia about a year ago.

On Tuesday, though, he commended Japan’s “firm position” and “significant support” for Ukraine.

Tokyo, along with its G7 partners, has imposed sanctions on Moscow and taken the unusual step of providing defense weaponry and offering asylum to individuals fleeing the crisis.

Provocative behavior

Stoltenberg and Kishida both expressed alarm about North Korea’s “provocative behavior,” which ranged from nuclear testing to ballistic missile tests.

Stoltenberg had pushed South Korea the day before in Seoul to provide military help for Ukraine, which was invaded by its neighbor Russia about a year ago.

He stated that China was “not our adversary,” but he warned of China’s rising military presence in Asia, “including nuclear weapons, bullying neighbors, and threatening Taiwan,” as well as disseminating misinformation about NATO and Ukraine.

As part of efforts to strengthen ties, Kishida stated that Japan would establish an independent representative office for its contacts with NATO.

Kishida also stated that Japan will consider regular participation in the alliance’s high-level meetings.

In December, Japan announced the most significant changes to its defense and security strategy in decades.

The new strategy includes plans to raise defense spending to two percent of GDP by fiscal 2027, bringing Japan in line with NATO member guidelines.

$1 Trillion green Investment matches fossil fuels for first time

fossil fuels
  • 31% increase over the previous year.
  • The surge was caused by the energy crisis that followed Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
  • Hydro and nuclear power continued to contribute 32% of total electricity generation in the 27-nation bloc.

PARIS: After hitting $1 trillion last year, investment in clean energy is on the verge of surpassing spending on fossil fuels for the first time.

Despite the achievement, BloombergNEF estimates that spending on energy transition technology must instantly increase to fulfill the aim of net-zero emissions by 2050 to mitigate climate change.

Renewables, nuclear, zero-emission vehicles, and recycling initiatives received $1.1 trillion in investment last year, matching spending on fossil fuels, according to the report.

This represents a 31% increase over the previous year and the first time the investment amount has been calculated in trillions.

According to the research, the surge was caused by the energy crisis that followed Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

“Investment in clean energy technology is on the verge of overtaking fossil fuel investments and will not look back,” said Albert Cheung, BloombergNEF’s head of global analysis.

Top polluter

China, the world’s top polluter, was by far the largest investor in energy transition, with the US trailing far behind.

China accounted for about half of the total worldwide investment, mainly in the steel recycling, renewable energy, and electric vehicles (EV) sectors.

Germany has maintained its third-place ranking, owing partly to a strong EV market.

However, a reduction in offshore wind projects caused investment in the UK to plummet by about a fifth, according to the research.

Renewable energy was the most heavily invested in the sector globally, accounting for $495 billion, followed by electrified transportation projects.

With the exception of nuclear power, all other sectors received unprecedented levels of investment, according to the experts.

The advancement of energy transition technologies coincides with an increase in fossil fuel investment in many countries in an effort to ensure energy security.

The war in Ukraine disrupted worldwide power supply because Russia, a major supplier of fossil fuels, curtailed gas supplies to European Union (EU) countries and was sanctioned for the invasion.

According to a separate analysis released on Tuesday by Ember, an energy think tank, wind, and solar energy generated 22% of EU electricity, exceeding gas (20%) for the first time.

Hydro and nuclear power continued to contribute 32% of total electricity generation in the 27-nation bloc.

US says Russia not complying with last remaining nuclear treaty

Russia
  • The State Department chastised Russia for suspending inspections and canceling discussions.
  • Russia is not complying with its obligation under the New START.
  • Diplomacy between the two nations has dwindled in the last year.

WASHINGTON – As tensions rise over the Ukraine conflict, the US stated on Tuesday that Russia was not complying with the New Strategic Weapons Reduction Deal (START), the world’s only remaining arms control treaty between the world’s two major nuclear powers.

In response to a congressional request, the State Department chastised Russia for suspending inspections and canceling discussions. However, it did not accuse its Cold War opponent of exceeding agreed-upon limitations on nuclear warheads.

“Russia is not complying with its obligation under the New START to facilitate inspection activities on its territory,” a State Department spokesperson said, charging that Moscow’s refusal “threatens the viability of US-Russian nuclear arms control.”

“Russia has a clear path for returning to full compliance. All Russia needs to do is allow inspection activities on its territory, just as it did for years under the New START Treaty, and meet in a session of the Bilateral Consultative Commission,” he said, referring to the formal talks set up under the treaty.

“There is nothing preventing Russian inspectors from traveling to the United States and conducting inspections.”

In early August, Moscow stated that it would suspend US inspections of its military sites under New START. It claimed to be in response to American obstruction of reviews by Russia, which Washington denies.

Diplomacy between the two nations has dwindled in the last year as the US has led an effort to punish Russia economically and supply Ukraine with billions of dollars in weapons as it fights back against a Moscow invasion.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has expressed thinly disguised threats to use nuclear weapons in Ukraine, reigniting Cold War-era concerns of a nuclear war.

Russia indefinitely postponed talks under New START that had been due to start on November 29 in Cairo, accusing the United States of “toxicity and animosity.”

Make the world safer

President Joe Biden extended New START by five years, until 2026, to allow time for negotiations while protecting what the Democratic government sees as a crucial current deal.

The previous Trump administration blew up past arms control treaties and was unwilling to keep New START in its current form, claiming that any nuclear pact must include China, whose arsenal is quickly rising but still much less than that of Russia and the United States.

The Biden administration showed a desire to preserve New START, stating that the pact was intended to “make the world safer.”

“To fully deliver on the promise of the treaty by ensuring it remains an instrument of stability and predictability, Russia must fully implement and comply with its obligations,” the State Department spokesperson said.

Republican members, who won control of the House in January, had urged Secretary of State Antony Blinken to report on whether Russia was in violation of New START by Tuesday.

The Republican chairs of the foreign affairs, armed services, and intelligence committees wrote last week that Russia’s actions and words “at a minimum create substantial compliance issues.”

The new START treaty, signed by then-President Barack Obama in 2010 during a period of improved ties, limited Russia and the United States to a total of 1,550 deployed strategic nuclear warheads apiece, a reduction of over 30% from the previous limit set in 2002.

It also restricts the number of launchers and heavy bombers to 800, which is still sufficient to destroy Earth.

Iranian military factory hit by drone attack

drone attack
  • The explosion occurred amid tensions with the West over Tehran’s nuclear activity.
  • The explosion only resulted in minimal damage and no injuries.
  • Two drones were trapped in defense traps and blew up, and one was shot down.

A military factory in the Iranian city of Isfahan was hit by a loud explosion overnight, which Tehran said was caused by an unidentified drone attack.

The explosion occurred amid tensions with the West over Tehran’s nuclear activity and the provision of weapons for Russia’s war in Ukraine, as well as months of domestic anti-government protests. There was no immediate claim of responsibility.

The “cowardly” strike, according to Iran‘s foreign minister, was meant to sow “insecurity” within Iran. According to the Defence Ministry, the explosion only resulted in minimal damage and no injuries. Independent confirmation of the damage’s scope was not possible.

According to Hossein Amirabdollahian, such actions “will not impair our scientists’ will to advance in our peaceful nuclear work.”

The plant, which the official news agency described as an ammunition factory, was visible in an Iranian media video. Fire trucks and other emergency vehicles were also seen on camera outside the complex.

The Defence Ministry issued a statement that was broadcast on state TV that read, “A failed attack was carried out utilizing micro aerial vehicles (MAVs) on one of the ministry’s workshop facilities around 23:30 (2000 GMT) on Saturday night.”

It stated that two drones were trapped in defense traps and blew up, and one was shot down. It barely slightly harmed a workshop building’s roof. There weren’t any losses. According to the statement, the incident “has not damaged our installations and purpose, and such heedless actions will not have an impact on the continuation of the country’s progress.

Separately, IRNA reported an enormous fire early on Sunday at a motor oil business in an industrial area close to the city of Tabriz in the northwest. It made no mention of the cause of the fire.

The Islamic Republic has in the past charged its longtime rival Israel with plotting strikes within Iranian territory via operatives. Tehran announced in July that it had detained a group of Kurdish terrorists working for Israel who was planning to blow up a “sensitive” defence industry facility in Isfahan.

When asked if Israel had any involvement in the most recent incident, a military spokesperson for Israel declined to answer. Israel has a habit of not commenting on specific occurrences but has long warned that it could attack Iran if negotiations fail to stop Tehran’s nuclear or ballistic missile programs.

An important assistant to President Volodymyr Zelenskiy connected the incident to the conflict in Ukraine, which accuses Iran of giving Russia hundreds of drones to attack civilian targets in Ukrainian cities far from the front.

“War logic is murderous and inexorable. It strictly bills the writers and collaborators, Mykhailo Podolyak tweeted. “Iranian oil refineries, drone and missile factories, and an explosive night. You were warned.” Isfahan Province is home to a number of Iranian nuclear facilities, including Natanz, the focal point of Iran’s uranium enrichment program, which Israel is said to have sabotaged in 2021. In recent years, there have been several explosions and fires near Iranian industrial, nuclear, and military sites.

Since September, negotiations to resurrect the 2015 nuclear agreement between Iran and the P5+1 have stalled. Tehran consented to restrict its nuclear activities in exchange for the lifting of sanctions under the agreement, which Washington abandoned in 2018 under then-President Donald Trump.

Iran has admitted to delivering drones to Russia but claims that the delivery took place before Moscow’s assault on Ukraine in 2016. Despite the fact that many Iranian drones have been downed and recovered in Ukraine, Moscow insists its forces do not utilize them.

In recent months, Iran’s clerical leaders have also seen internal unrest, with a crackdown on large-scale anti-establishment protests sparked by the death in detention of a woman arrested for allegedly defying the country’s stringent Islamic dress code.

Ukraine war: Russian athletes cannot be allowed at Olympics, Zelensky says

Olympics
  • Ukraine has threatened to boycott the Paris 2024 Olympics.
  • Mr. Zelensky discussed the matter with French President Emmanuel Macron.
  • Mr. Zelensky said, there can be no neutrality in sports.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky thinks that permitting Russia to compete at the 2024 Olympics in Paris would amount to declaring that “horror is somehow acceptable”.

He stated that he had discussed the matter with French President Emmanuel Macron.

He stressed that Moscow should not be permitted to use the Olympics for propaganda purposes.

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has announced that Russian and Belarussian athletes would be able to compete as neutrals in the Olympics.

However, if Russian and Belarussian athletes are allowed to compete, Ukraine has threatened to boycott the Paris 2024 Olympics.

The IOC’s efforts “to bring Russian athletes back into the Olympic Games are attempts to teach the entire world that terror is somehow acceptable,” Mr. Zelensky stated in his nightly video message.

Russia must not be permitted to exploit the Olympics or any other sporting event to promote its aggression or state chauvinism, he added.

The IOC said this week that Russian and Belarusian athletes might compete as “neutral athletes”, noting that “no athlete should be banned from competing solely because of their passport”.

Mr. Zelensky, on the other hand, claims that there can be no neutrality in sports while his country’s players are dying on the battlefield.

He also drew parallels with the 1936 Olympic Games in Berlin, which were held during the Nazi regime.

“There was a major Olympic mistake,” he said. “The Olympic movement and terrorist states shouldn’t ever,  cross paths.”

The UK government has also denounced the plan to allow athletes to compete neutrally as a “world away from the reality of conflict”.

Mr. Zelensky, on the other hand, claims that there can be no neutrality in sports while his country’s players are dying on the battlefield.

UN accuses Russia of breaking child protection rules over refugees

UN
  • UN refugee agency has accused Moscow.
  • Nearly three million Ukrainian refugees have been registered in Russia.
  • It is unknown how many of these people are children.

The head of the UN refugee agency has accused Moscow of violating “fundamental” child protection principles by issuing Russian passports to unaccompanied child refugees.

Filippo Grandi added that Russia had then placed these children for adoption by Russian families.

He stated that the UNHCR would try to gain access to those affected and find solutions in their best interests.

Mr. Grandi, on the other hand, admitted that he had no idea how many children were affected.

“In the situation of war, you cannot determine if children have families or guardianship. And therefore, until that is clarified, you cannot give them another nationality or have them adopted by another family,” Mr. Grandi said.

According to the most recent UNHCR figures, nearly three million Ukrainian refugees have been registered in Russia, more than in any other European country. It is unknown how many of these people are children.

Earlier this month, a Ukrainian presidential adviser claimed that nearly 14,000 children had been “deported” to Russia from occupied parts of Ukraine, accusing Russia of kidnapping them. The allegations have been denied by the Kremlin.

Mr. Grandi stated that the UNHCR seeks access to Russia “all the time,” but that this has been “rare, sporadic, and not unfettered” thus far.

UN’s top human rights official expressed concern

His remarks come after the UN’s top human rights official expressed concern in July that Ukrainian children were being “forcefully deported” to Russia from orphanages in the eastern Donbas region. There was also concern that Moscow was “changing existing legislation” to expedite the process.

Michelle Bachelet stated at the time that she was unable to confirm the allegations or the number of children who may have been affected.

Then in September, the assistant UN secretary-general for human rights said there were “credible allegations” of “forced transfers of unaccompanied children to Russian occupied territory, or to the Russian Federation itself”.

Mr. Grandi was speaking to local residents at the end of a six-day visit to Ukraine, telling them that “the whole world admires you because you are strong people.”

He predicted that more refugees would return to Ukraine this summer, as they did last year, but warned that more fighting would lead to more displacement, particularly internally.

Mr. Grandi also painted a bleak global picture when it came to refugees, predicting that the current figure of around 103 million would “almost inevitably” rise in the coming years.
