Australia defends its decision to cancel Afghanistan cricket series

Australia
  • Australia men team withdrew from ODI series against Afghanistan.
  • Cricket Australia cited Taliban crackdown on women’s rights.
  • Australia has been committed to growing game for women and men.

SYDNEY: Australia defended its contentious decision to cancel a cricket series with Afghanistan in response to the Taliban’s violation of women’s “basic human rights” on Friday.

“Basic human rights is not politics,” Cricket Australia chief executive Nick Hockley said in a statement sent to AFP after Afghanistan’s cricket board lashed the cancellation as “pathetic”.

Following a tour of India, the Australian men’s team was scheduled to play three one-day internationals against their Afghan opponents in the United Arab Emirates in March.

“It is clearly a very challenging and sad situation. We did not take this decision lightly,” Hockley said.

Cricket Australia had been hopeful of playing Afghanistan and was in regular contact with the Afghanistan Cricket Board, he added.

“However announcements by the Taliban in late November and late December signalling the deterioration of basic human rights for women in Afghanistan led to our decision to withdraw from these games,” he said.

Hockley said the Australian cricket authority consulted with the Australian government and others before scrapping the games.

He also responded to Afghanistan’s best-known international cricketer and leg-spinner Rashid Khan, who had criticised the cancellation and warned he would be “strongly considering” his future in Australia’s Big Bash League.

“We acknowledge and applaud Rashid Khan’s and other Afghanistan cricketers’ comments at the time condemning the Taliban’s decision to ban women from universities. Rashid will always be welcome in the BBL,” Hockley said.

Australia was committed to growing the game for women and men, the cricket chief said, adding that he hoped better conditions for women and girls in Afghanistan would allow cricket between the countries to resume “in the not too distant future”.

Billionaire calls for revisions to the failed Australia-Asia solar megaproject

solar
  • Andrew Forrest urged on Thursday for a rethink of a $20 billion+ project.
  • The firm said the project requires vision and precise execution.
  • To supply power to Singapore and Indonesia, the project entails constructing a 20 gigawatt.

MELBOURNE: Iron ore magnate Andrew Forrest urged on Thursday for a rethink of a $20 billion+ project to carry solar power from Australia to Singapore, which failed after a disagreement over funding between him and tech billionaire Mike Cannon-Brookes.

This week, less than a year after raising A$210 million for the Australia-Asia PowerLink project, Singapore-based Sun Cable, which is mostly owned by Forrest’s private company Squadron Energy and Cannon-Brookes’ private company Grok, hired voluntary administrators.

In Squadron’s first public comments since the collapse was announced on Wednesday, the firm said the project “requires vision and precise execution”.

“Squadron Energy believes in the vision but believes how the project is delivered needs urgent change,” Squadron Chairman John Hartman said in an emailed statement.

Solar farms in Singapore and Indonesia

To supply power to Singapore and Indonesia, the project entails constructing a 20 gigawatt (GW) solar farm, the largest energy storage facility in the world, and the world’s longest undersea cable, which is 4,200 kilometers (2,610 miles) long.

Hartman stated, “exceptional governance processes and world-class project delivery capabilities, as well as developing bankable technology, will be required.”

He was not available for further comment.

Co-owner Cannon-Brookes, who initially invested in the project in 2019 and described it as “totally batshit insane,” said on Wednesday that he still supported the initiative’s goals and crew 100 percent.

After speaking to “very senior people” at Sun Cable, Australia’s energy minister, Chris Bowen, expressed optimism that the project will eventually move forward with a new finance arrangement.

“I remain very upbeat and excited about Sun Cable’s future,” Bowen told reporters.

Sun Cable, whose construction had been slated to start in 2024, is essential to Australia’s goal of becoming a significant exporter of renewable energy, according to him.

Netizen confused over rude chain restaurant’s staff in Australia

restaurant staff
  • Karen’s Diner is an international food chain themed to be intentionally mean to the guests.
  • A customer recorded their experience at the restaurant and the clip is now going viral.
  • The viral clip has amassed over 22.8 million views and over lakh likes on Twitter.

Good food and excellent service are two factors that make restaurant chains more approachable. However, there is one multinational restaurant company that is purposefully cruel to its customers. Karen’s Diner, a novelty restaurant chain, has locations in several countries, including Australia, New Zealand, and the United Kingdom. To keep their philosophy of offering rude service, the personnel can say whatever they wish to the consumers. A customer documented their visit to the curiously themed eatery, and the video is now going viral.

An employee is shown in the video with a cruel expression on their face smashing the food trays on the table. As if that weren’t enough, the staffer then gives the customer the middle finger before picking up what looks to be a potato ring off their dish and eating it. If this had happened anywhere else, the customer would have been irritated, but at Karen’s Diner, it ended up amused them. Near the end, the client, who appears to be recording the video, can be heard chuckling in the background.

View the video here:

The restaurant chain’s ‘We are rude’ attitude has divided the internet; although some believe eating food from a customer’s plate is excessive, many others believe it is appropriate. “Y’all Karen’s Diner is a novelty restaurant where they are intentionally mean to the guests,” one user remarked in defence of the establishment.

Canada approves $14 billion order for F-35 stealth fighter jets

Canada
  • The final of the original eight F-35 program partners will be Canada.
  • The country needs a fighter fleet to maintain control over one of the world’s greatest airspace stretches.
  • The three versions of the planes are F-35A, F-35B, and F-35C.

In a $14.2 billion contract announced by the Ottawa government on Monday, Canada will purchase 88 F-35 stealth fighter jets.

An announcement from the Canadian government stated that the first of the US-built aircraft is anticipated to join the Royal Canadian Air Force in 2026 and that the entire fleet will be operational by 2033 or 2034.

With the agreement, Canada will be the final of the original eight F-35 program partners to own one of the best fighter jets in the world.

“In today’s complex global environment, Canada requires a military that is flexible, agile, and capable of responding to a variety of unforeseen situations,” Canadian Defense Minister Anita Anand said in a statement.

“As the rules-based international order is challenged around the world, the F-35 will be essential for protecting Canadians, enhancing Arctic security and national sovereignty, and enabling Canada to meet its NATO, NORAD, and other obligations well into the future,” the statement state.

Air and missile defense for North America is provided by NORAD, a joint US-Canadian organization.

Over the past year, particularly after Russia invaded Ukraine, the F-35 has experienced a surge in demand, according to manufacturer Lockheed Martin.

In 2022, NATO allies Greece and the Czech Republic also announced requests to purchase the F-35 stealth fighters, along with deals for Germany, Switzerland, and Finland.

Along with the US Air Force, Navy, and Marine Corps, F-35s are currently or soon will be a member of the fleets of Australia, the UK, Italy, the Netherlands, Norway, Denmark, Japan, South Korea, Israel, Poland, Belgium, and Singapore.

The three versions of the planes are the basic F-35A, the F-35B with short takeoff and vertical landing, and the F-35C with aircraft carrier capability.

Canada will replace CF-18 aircraft

Canada will buy the F-35A version to replace its outdated CF-18 aircraft.

The country needs a fighter fleet to maintain control over one of the world’s greatest airspace stretches, the enormous Arctic.

Accordingly, the government stated that the $14.2 billion (19 billion Canadian dollars) price tag includes building work at two air bases in Alberta and Quebec, as well as related tools and services.

According to the release, the program is anticipated to create 3,300 jobs yearly over 25 years and add $425 million ($310 million) to the country’s GDP each year.

The government reported that Canada’s industry, an original participant in the F-35 program, had received contracts totaling $2.8 billion so far for the manufacture of the fighter jet.
