Tragic Explosion at Fireworks Warehouse in Thailand Claims 9 Lives

Tragic Explosion at Fireworks Warehouse in Thailand Claims 9 Lives
  • Fireworks warehouse blast in Thailand kills 9, injures 115.
  • Cause of explosion linked to construction work
  • Thailand’s construction industry has a troubling safety record.

In southern Thailand, a devastating incident unfolded near the Malaysian border, as a blast erupted at a fireworks warehouse located within a market in Sungai Kolok. The tragic explosion occurred at approximately 15:00 local time, resulting in the tragic loss of nine lives and causing injuries to over 115 individuals.

According to the local governor, the explosion’s cause seems to be linked to construction work, specifically a “technical error” that occurred during steel welding. Fortunately, authorities managed to bring the fire at the market under control. However, the scene was marked by disturbing footage, showing a large plume of smoke rising from the market, inflicting significant damage to numerous shops, residences, and vehicles. The force of the blast even tore off the roofs of some structures and left others engulfed in flames.

Seksan Taesen, an eyewitness who lives 100m (330 ft) from the market, said he was at home when he heard a “loud, thunderous noise and my whole house shook”.

“Then I saw my roof was wide open. I looked outside and I saw houses collapsing and people lying on the ground everywhere. It was chaos”, he told the media.

Thailand’s construction industry has a troubling safety record, with frequent and deadly accidents occurring as a common occurrence.

Just last month, there was a tragic incident in the capital city, Bangkok, where two individuals lost their lives after a road bridge collapsed into traffic during its construction.

These incidents highlight the urgent need for improved safety measures and stricter regulations in the construction sector to prevent further loss of life and injuries.

Two dead, one wounded in ongoing Thailand shooting

Thailand
  • Thai police on Wednesday surrounded a house.
  • A gunman had holed up after killing two people and wounding another.
  • Thailand has high rates of gun ownership.

Thai police on Wednesday surrounded a house where a gunman had holed up after killing two people and wounding another, a spokesman said.

The shooter started firing in Phetchaburi — some 100 kilometres (60 miles) southwest of Bangkok — at around 3 pm (0800 GMT), national police spokesperson Achayon Kraithong told AFP.

“Police are still surrounding the area… where a man with a gun started shooting and killed two men and wounded one,” he said.

“The incident is still going on,” he added, declining to give further details.

Thailand has high rates of gun ownership and there has been a steady trickle of violent incidents in the past 12 months, including one of the deadliest attacks in recent history.

The kingdom was left reeling in October after a former police sergeant murdered 36 people, 24 of them children, in northeastern Nong Bua Lam Phu province.

Thailand dissolves parliament  for crucial elections in May

Thailand
  • Election to fuel bitter rivalries.
  • Vote to be held May 14 – knowledgeable sources.
  • Daughter, niece of 2 Shinawatra PMs leads opinion polls.

Thailand‘s parliament was dissolved on Monday to pave the way for a May election, which would reignite a long-running power battle between a military-backed establishment and a political movement that has dominated elections for two decades.

The Royal Gazette said that King Maha Vajiralongkorn had approved a proclamation dissolving parliament, which would be followed by an election 45 to 60 days later.

No election date has been set, but two sources with knowledge of the situation told sources earlier on Monday that the poll would take place on May 14.

“This is a return of political decision-making power to the people swiftly to continue democratic government with the King as head of state,” said the decree published on Monday.

The election puts the billionaire Shinawatra family and its business friends against competing parties and politicians from the royalist military and old-money conservatives.

With populist policies aimed at Thailand’s working classes, the Shinawatra family-controlled parties have won every election since 2001, including twice by landslides, yet three of their governments have been deposed in military coups or by court judgments.

According to the government’s plan, the May election will pick members of parliament, who, along with the Senate, will select a prime minister by the end of July, with a cabinet established by early August.

In opinion polls, the main opposition Pheu Thai party’s Paetongtarn Shinawatra is the frontrunner for prime minister, with her support soaring 10 points to 38.2% in a poll released over the weekend, more than doubling the support of her nearest rival.

Incumbent Prayuth Chan-ocha, who has been in power since his coup against Paetongtarn’s aunt, Yingluck Shinawatra, has been trailing in polls and was ranked third in the recent National Institute of Development Administration survey (NIDA).

Prayuth will serve as the leader of a caretaker administration until the election.

“I’m glad I’ve built something good, generated revenue for the country, built industry. There has been a lot of investment,” Prayuth, 68, told a news conference after the dissolution.

“You have to ask the people if they are satisfied or not … I have done a lot in the many years that have passed.”

According to the NIDA poll of 2,000 people, 50% of respondents would choose candidates from Pheu Thai.

Paetongtarn declared on Friday that she was certain of winning by a landslide, hoping to avoid any political maneuvering against her party, which has twice been driven from power by judicial judgments and military coups.

Search for missing radioactive cylinder begins in Thailand

Thailand

Officials in Thailand are searching for a metal cylinder. Containing Caesium-137, a highly radioactive chemical. Caesium-137 can cause skin burns, radiation illness, and potentially fatal cancer. Radioactive cylinder has gone missing in Thailand

Thailand
  •  A metal cylinder went missing from a power station earlier this week.
  • The Thai canister went missing in a far more populous location.
  • The cylinder was reported missing by personnel on March 10 during normal checks at the coal power plant.

Officials in Thailand are rushing to find a metal cylinder containing deadly radioactive materials that went missing from a power station earlier this week, warning the public of major health hazards if they come into contact with it.

The discovery comes only two months after Australia was compelled to initiate a similar search for a tiny radioactive capsule, which was eventually discovered on the side of a motorway.

But, unlike the Australian capsule, which went missing in the country’s isolated outback hundreds of miles from the nearest major city, the Thai canister went missing in a far more populous location.

Contains Caesium-137

The cylinder, which measured 30 centimeters (4 inches) long and 13 centimeters (5 inches) wide, was reported missing by personnel on March 10 during normal checks at the coal power plant in Prachin Buri, a region in central Thailand east of Bangkok.

The province has a population of about 500,000 people and is home to several of Thailand’s top national parks, including the well-known Khao Yai National Park, which is popular with both domestic and foreign visitors.

The parks are a popular day trip from adjacent Bangkok, a massive 14-million-person metropolis.

The cylinder was part of a silo and was used to measure ash. It contains Caesium-137, a highly radioactive chemical that scientists think is possibly dangerous.

According to a statement from the Office of Atoms for Peace (OAP), Thailand’s official regulator for radioactive and nuclear research, search teams and drones have been deployed to recover the lost cylinder.

On Wednesday, Deputy Secretary General Pennapa Kanchana told sources that radioactive detection technology was being used to identify the cylinder.

Drones and Robots

“We are searching in waste recycling shops in the area,” she said. “We are (using) survey equipment to detect for signals. For areas we cannot reach, we have dispatched drones and robots.”

Thai police are also assisting in the search, believing the cylinder has been gone since February but was only officially reported missing by the National Power Plant 5 business on Friday.

Authorities have analyzed CCTV footage from the plant, according to Si Maha Phot district police commander Mongkol Thopao, but have been hampered by “limited views” of the machine.

“It is unclear if the item was stolen and sold to a recycling shop or misplaced elsewhere,” Mongkol said. “We have dispatched our teams to recycle shops around the area… we still couldn’t find it.”

Caesium-137, according to experts, can cause major health concerns for those who come into contact with it, including skin burns from near exposure, radiation illness, and potentially fatal cancer risks, especially for those who are exposed unknowingly for long periods of time.

Caesium-137 has a half-life of roughly 30 years, which implies it might endanger the population for decades if not discovered.

Pennapa of the Atoms for Peace Office advised the people not to panic.

First thing, Skin irritation

“If general people (come into) contact unknowingly, the health effects will depend on the level of the (radiation) intensity. If it’s high, the first thing we will see is skin irritation.”

This is not the first time something like this has occurred in Thailand.

According to a Congressional Research Service study, in 2000, two scrap collectors purchased canisters carrying another radioactive isotope, cobalt-60, and carried them to a junkyard where they were broken open.

According to the report, some workers received burn-like injuries, three people died and seven others were injured by radiation. Approximately 2,000 more people in the area were also exposed to radiation.

Nonetheless, Pennapa claims that the missing canister is significantly less radioactive than the event in 2000.

The most recent incident in Thailand followed a similar event in Western Australia in January when a tiny capsule containing Caesium-137 went missing while being transferred from an iron ore mine to a depot in Perth along a desolate outback highway.

The capsule was eventually located after a difficult six-day search, and officials are now investigating how it reportedly slid off the back of a vehicle during shipment.

Nuclear radiation experts in Australia who previously spoke to sources claimed the capsule’s disappearance was “extremely unusual” and discussed the difficulties of recovering such a small device.

Nonetheless, they pointed out that the search location was quite isolated.

“So it would be very unlikely to have much impact (on people),” said Ivan Kempson, an associate professor in Biophysics from the University of Southern Australia.

But there had been some past examples, Kempson noted, of people finding similar things and suffering radiation poisoning.

“The concern… is the potential impact on the health of the person who would find the capsule,” he said.

Myanmar: 22 people were killed in a monastery attack

Myanmar
  • At least 22 people were slain at a monastery in Mayanmar’s Southern Shan State.
  • There was a savage military crackdown on pro-democracy protestors.
  • At least 2,900 individuals have been killed by junta soldiers in Myanmar since the coup.

On Saturday, at least 22 people were slain at a monastery in Myanmar‘s Southern Shan State, including three monks, while local rebel groups and the military-backed junta accused each other of carrying out a massacre.

Myanmar has been embroiled in political turmoil since military commander Min Aung Hlaing seized power in a coup in 2021, shattering any prospect that the Southeast Asian country of 55 million people would become a functioning democracy.

After the coup, there was a savage military crackdown on pro-democracy protestors, with citizens being slain in the street, abducted in nocturnal raids, and allegedly tortured in jail.

According to the advocacy group Aid Group for Political Prisoners, at least 2,900 individuals have been killed by junta soldiers in Myanmar since the coup, and over 17,500 have been jailed, the bulk of whom are still detained (AAPP).

The coup has also led in an increase in bloodshed between the military and a slew of resistance organisations aligned with long-established ethnic militias in a country plagued by insurgencies for decades.

Opposition organisations have regularly accused Myanmar’s military of carrying out mass executions, air strikes, and war crimes against civilians in conflict zones, claims the junta rejects despite mounting proof.

The newest atrocity claim surfaced last week in Shan State, Myanmar’s isolated and hilly northeastern region bordered by China, Laos, and Thailand.

At least 21 dead were piled up outside the Nan Nein Monastery, which is located in the village of Nan Nein in Pinlaung Township, according to photos and video released by the Karenni Nationalities Defence Force (KNDF).

Several were observed wearing civilian clothing and suffering from multiple bullet wounds. There were also three bodies clothed in saffron orange robes, which Buddhist monks normally wear.

Bullet holes could be seen on the monastery’s walls in the footage given by the organisation.

The dead were observed lined up and slumped against the walls of the monastery, with pools of blood on the ground.

Both the KNDF and Myanmar’s military agree that combat occurred in the region, but two opposing narratives have developed in the aftermath of the monastery massacre.

“On March 11, the Burmese military killed three monks and 19 civilians,” KNDF spokesperson Philip Soe Aung told. “On March 12, our forces arrived at the monastery and discovered the bodies.”

This week, fierce combat erupted between local rebel groups and Myanmar’s military in an area near Nan Nein Village.

The military shelled and launched airstrikes directly at the village, causing inhabitants to seek cover in a neighbouring monastery, according to Soe Aung.

Myanmar’s junta spokesperson, Major General Zaw Min Tun, denied the military was to blame.

In comments published on Tuesday by the state-run newspaper Global Light of Myanmar, he blamed the violence at the monastery on “terrorist groups,” naming the Karen National Police Force (KNPF), the People’s Defence Force (PDF), and the Karenni National Progressive Party (KNPP), an administration uniting ethnic groups in the state.

Zaw Min Tun claimed fighters opened fire after “the Tatmadaw (cooperated) with the local people’s militia and took security measures for the region.”

“When the terrorist groups violently opened fire… some villagers were killed and injured. (Others) ran away.”

COVID: Chinese tourists hit Thai beaches for first time in 3 years

Chinese
  • China lifted COVID-19 restrictions and reopened its borders.
  • The reopening of China boosts optimism for the return of Chinese visitors.
  • The Thai government anticipates at least five million Chinese tourists this year.

Phuket: Chinese visitors are returning to Thailand for the first time since China lifted COVID-19 restrictions and reopened its borders, visiting white-sand beaches and enjoying mango sticky rice and prawns.

“We hadn’t traveled out of China in three years because of the pandemic,” said tourist and company owner Kiki Hu, 28, in Krabi on Thailand’s southwest coast. “We may now depart and come here for the holidays. I’m pleased and emotional “.

With China celebrating the Lunar New Year, Asia’s tourist hotspots have been bracing for the return of Chinese tourists, who spent $255 billion worldwide prior to the pandemic. Countries ranging from Thailand to Japan had previously relied on China as their primary source of foreign visitors.

Yoyo Chen, 32, a business owner from Yiwu in central China, said returning to Thailand felt like coming home.

“I came to eat seafood. When I visited here before, I ate mango sticky rice, which was amazing. I kept thinking about the mango sticky rice here while I was in China. I’m looking forward to the meals and seeing the beaches “Chen stated.

“Obtaining visas is now quite simple. The tourism business is more established here, there are many enjoyable activities and cuisine, and the Thai people are quite friendly “She stated.

The reopening of China boosts optimism for the return of Chinese visitors, who made up roughly a third of Thailand’s 40 million foreign tourist arrivals prior to the pandemic.

The Thai government anticipates at least five million Chinese tourists this year, with 300,000 arriving in the first quarter.

Thailand offers visitors from the Gulf countries to stay longer

Visitors
  • Thailand has decided to extend the length of stay for visitors from the Gulf countries.
  • The visa will be extended to 45 days instead of 30 days.
  • It is not clear if the stay extension applies to Gulf nationals only, or to expatriates in the Gulf countries as well.

Cairo: As part of its full reopening to tourism, Thailand has decided to extend the length of stay for visitors from the Gulf countries, Saudi media reported, citing Saudi Arabia’s embassy in Bangkok.

The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) has announced that the stay period for tourists from visa-free countries, including Gulf countries, will be extended to 45 days instead of 30 days as of March 31, and to 30 days instead of 15 for those eligible for visa on arrival.

Saudi Arabia and Thailand agreed last year to fully restore diplomatic ties and exchange ambassadors for the first time in nearly 32 years.

The decision was reached during Thai Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-historic cha’s official visit to Riyadh, where he met Saudi Crown Prince Mohammad bin Salman.

Prince Mohammad paid an official visit to Thailand in November.

TAT stated earlier this month that Thailand will continue to welcome all international tourists under the fully reopened-to-tourism policy that was implemented last October.

Thailand is also offering visitors a longer period of stay as part of its full reopening to tourism, according to TAT.

The period of stay for tourists from visa-exempt countries/territories is extended to 45 days (from 30 days) until 31 March 2023, and to 30 days (from 15 days) for those eligible for a visa on arrival.

“International travelers arriving in Thailand are not required to show proof of vaccination,” Thailand’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Public Health Anutin Charnvirakul said, according to TAT.
