- The HTMS Sukhothai sank on Sunday night with 105 crew members on board.
- The search is still ongoing for 23 sailors who are missing.
- Navy officials lowered their initial estimate of the ship’s population from 106 to 105.
Six crew members of a Thai warship that sank off the nation’s southeast coast have been found dead, according to the navy.
On Tuesday, military personnel searching the Gulf of Thailand’s seas discovered the dead sailors and one survivor.
The search is still ongoing for 23 missing sailors. The navy reports that a total of 76 crew members have been saved.
After losing power in a storm, the HTMS Sukhothai sank on Sunday night with 105 crew members on board.
With hundreds of personnel on four naval ships, numerous helicopters, and unmanned drones all deployed to scan a 50 sq. km (30 sq. mi) area of ocean, the Thai navy and air force have been searching for survivors for the past two days.
“The latest person was found 41 hours from when the ship sank and he was alive. So we believe that there are those still alive out there… we will continue to search,” said Admiral Chonlathis Navanugraha, the navy’s chief of staff.
Given the length of time they had been in the ocean, a navy commander had earlier stated search personnel had only a two-day opportunity to find anyone alive.
Numerous seamen have already been discovered, some of them weary and asleep. Not every person who is missing is donning a life jacket.
Captain Krapich Korawee-Paparwit of the HTMS Kraburi told Media, “We found this person holding a life buoy… He was floating in the water for 10 hours.”
He added that the man, still conscious, had a minor head wound and “sore eyes as he was exposed to sea water.”
Other seamen who leapt from the sinking ship were discovered on a life raft. The military posted images and video of survivors being transported to hospitals while they are wrapped in blankets on Twitter.
On Tuesday, Navy officials lowered their initial estimate of the ship’s population from 106 to 105.
