  • Salma was the first queen in the history of Morocco to be kept in the public and media eye.

King Mohammed VI and Princess Lalla Salma tied the knot in 20o2

The couple, who met in 1999 when Salma was a student of engineering, developed a close relationship before getting married two years later.

Salma was the first queen in the history of Morocco to be kept in the public and media eye.

In 2017, the royal who had devotedly worked for the empowerment of women vanished overnight.

In 2019, when Meghan Markle and Prince Harry travelled to see the King, Salma was nowhere to be found.

Salma is still referred to as a “Ghost Princess”

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry met King Mohammed VI during their 2019 visit to Morocco, but Princess Salma was nowhere to be found.

Netty Leistra, a royal journalist, told Royal Central: “I think Salma had a very hard job trying to be the first visible wife of a Moroccan king.

“There is quite an age gap too. Salma did some good things and of course, gave birth to two children.

“I always thought she did rather well.

“I guess that if the news is correct about the divorce, they will give her a nice big house and all the money she needs so that she won’t say anything about it.

“But I think it is rather sad if it is true.”

Spain seizes first underwater drug smuggling drones

  • Officers seize three “drone submarines” under construction and arrest eight people in Spain.
  • Police say it is the first time they have seized such devices, officially known as unmanned underwater vehicles.

Spanish authorities announced Monday that they had seized three underwater drones capable of transporting large amounts of drugs from Morocco to Spain and had dismantled a gang suspected of manufacturing them.

Officers seized three “drone submarines” under construction and arrested eight people in Spain, according to a police statement.

“The three — two of which were being built and one which was practically completed — were to be delivered to French drug traffickers for transporting large quantities of cocaine,” it said.

Each one could carry up to 200 kilogrammes (440 pounds) of product.

Police said it was the first time they had seized such devices, which are officially known as unmanned underwater vehicles (UUVs).

Morocco sues Spain reporter over spyware bugging claim

Morocco
  • Morocco files lawsuit against Spanish journalist who claims his phone was targeted by spyware.
  • Ignacio Cembrero worked for news website El Confidencial.
  • Media investigation accused Morocco of using Israeli-made spyware to target journalists. Rabat has denied the allegations.

Morocco has filed a lawsuit against a Spanish journalist who claimed his phone was targeted by Pegasus spyware planted by Rabat, according to judicial sources.

A court in Madrid accepted the complaint against Ignacio Cembrero, an expert on Spain-Morocco relations who works for the news website El Confidencial, according to a spokesman for the regional court authority.

Last year, an investigation by 17 media organizations accused Morocco of using Israeli-made spyware, which infiltrates mobile phones in order to extract data or to activate a camera or microphone to spy on their owners. Rabat has denied the allegations.

According to a copy of the complaint seen by AFP, Morocco is demanding that Cembrero withdraw his allegations and pay Morocco’s legal costs.

“The Kingdom of Morocco is not involved in spying on Ignacio Cembrero nor on any other citizen” and “does not have the Pegasus programme”, the lawyer representing Rabat said.

Cembrero had also flagged the lawsuit on his Twitter account.

“Morocco is taking me to court for accusing it of spying with Pegasus,” he tweeted on Monday.

He has said it is “the fourth time” Morocco had sued him in Spain but the first time it had demanded he “retract” claims Rabat was responsible for spying with Pegasus software.

“It’s a political trial to curtail journalists’ freedom of expression,” he tweeted.

A vast investigation by more than 80 reporters in 10 countries revealed in July 2021 that Pegasus spyware had been used against at least 50,000 people around the world.

They included at least 180 journalists as well as human rights defenders, politicians and military top brass.

The information was first leaked to Amnesty International and French NGO Forbidden Stories who then shared it with more than a dozen media organizations.

Morocco was singled out as one of the countries that had purchased the programme from Israel’s NGO Group and had used the spyware against journalists.

According to Forbidden Stories, Cembrero’s phone was one of several phones targeted “for targeting” by Pegasus.

US warns of Militants and Russian forces as Africa war games end

Russian forces
  • The Sahel region is a vast territory stretching across the south of Africa’s Sahara Desert.
  • It includes countries such as Burkina Faso, Chad, Mali, Mauritania and Niger.
  • More than 7,500 personnel from a dozen countries took part in the “African Lion” exercises.

The top US general for Africa has warned of “violent extremism” and the threat of Russian mercenaries in the Sahel region, speaking as war games in Morocco came to a close.

“We are seeing an increase in violent extremism in Western Africa, particularly in the Sahel region,” said US Africa Command commander General Stephen J. Townsend (AFRICOM).

The Sahel region is a vast territory stretching across the south of Africa’s Sahara Desert, incorporating countries such as Burkina Faso, Chad, Mali, Mauritania and Niger.

“We are seeing the arrival of malign actors, and specifically I am thinking of Russian mercenaries from Wagner,” Townsend told AFP in the North African nation on Thursday, at the conclusion of a four-week long “African Lion” international military exercise.

“This training is not specifically oriented on those problems, but it will help all of our armed forces if we are called to combat this kind of problem in the future,” Townsend said.

Islamic State-linked jihadists, whose power was once thought to be waning in the Sahel, have recently expanded their reach and marking their presence with an unprecedented series of civilian massacres.

Mali has been especially hard hit, a former French colony where the strategic landscape has changed dramatically following two coups in August 2020 and May 2021.

Bamako developed closer ties with Moscow, bringing in military personnel that France says are mercenaries from Russia’s Wagner group.

AFRICOM, which is based in the German city of Stuttgart, is responsible for US military operations across Africa.
