Morocco and Nigeria have agreed to build a major pipeline that will transport gas from southeast Nigeria across the Sahara and through 13 African countries.
The 7,000-kilometer (4,300-mile) link will connect with the Maghreb European Pipeline in northern Morocco.
Mele Kyari, the CEO of Nigeria’s National Petroleum Company (NNPC), stated at the signing ceremony in Rabat that the project will improve living standards and reduce desertification in West Africa.
Algeria stopped using a pipeline that runs through Morocco to Spain last November, depriving Moroccans of both gas and transit fees.
The NNPC stated in a statement that the project will also supply gas to West African countries and open up a new export route to Europe.
It is expected to produce approximately three billion cubic feet of gas per day. However, it is unclear when the project will be completed.
The agreement is being signed at a time when the global energy crisis is worsening as a result of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Europe has been looking for ways to reduce their reliance on Russian gas.
