Gautam Gambhir: important for India to play with Pakistan in early stages

Gautam Gambhir: important for India to play with Pakistan in early stages

Former India opener, Gautam Gambhir believed that playing against Pakistan in an early stage of the T20 World Cup will help the Indian team to focus on the remaining tournament.

The international body said on Tuesday, that India and Pakistan will play together in the ICC T20 World Cup on 24th October in a group-stage encounter.

Gautam said that it will help the Indian team as they can then focus on the remaining matches of the tournament. Speaking on a television show, Gautam emphasized the importance of India clashing with Pakistan in the initial stages of the game.

He said, “In 2007 as well, when we went on to win the World Cup, our first game was against Scotland, which was washed out, but then practically, our first game was against Pakistan. And that is exactly what I mentioned, it is important to play Pakistan in the early stages of the tournament because what happens is you don’t want to keep thinking about Pakistan you can finish it off initially and concentrate on the entire tournament, and it is exactly the same for the fans and the country as well.”

He added, “Irrespective of what the result is, I am really happy for both the countries that they are going to play against each other in the initial stages.”

The ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2021 in the United Arab Emirates and Oman will get in action from 17th October, with the final to be played in Dubai on 14th November.

The complete schedule of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2021, being hosted by India in the UAE and Oman, will be announced during a digital show to be broadcast via T20worldcup.com and the ICC Cricket app on Tuesday, 17 August.

Former England cricketer, Isa Guha, will compere the show, who will debate the prospects of different teams, notable matchups and highlight the key players in the 16-team event with Daren Sammy and Dinesh Karthik.

Isa played over 100 international matches and was part of the squads that won the ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup and the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup in 2009, she said that she is excited to present Tuesday’s show.

Isa, “I have enjoyed watching and commentating on T20 cricket from around the world, and I’m really excited to be part of a show around the schedule announcement of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup. It will also be a good opportunity to catch up with my friends and colleagues on the circuit – Daren Sammy and Dinesh Karthik, as we look ahead to the tournament and discuss all the match-ups.”

Daren, who led the West Indies team to victory in 2012 and 2016, also backs his team to do well in the seventh edition.

Daren, “The ICC Men’s T20 World Cup is a pinnacle event in the T20 format. We’ve had the pleasure of lifting the trophy twice and I’m sure the West Indies will be one of the favourites to win once again. I know fans back home and in the rest of the world are waiting with enthusiasm for this event. I look forward to being a part of this show and discussing the schedule.”

Dinesh played over 150 international matches across the three formats and was included in the squad of the India team that won the inaugural edition in 2007, feels the scheduled launch will increase anticipation among fans.

Dinesh, “The schedule announcement takes us one step closer to the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup and is the point from where teams start chalking out their final plans. Yuvraj Singh opened up about his desire to become Team India captain

Yuvraj Singh

“I was expecting to captain India but then MS Dhoni’s name was announced,” says Yuvraj Singh.

The all-rounder opened up about his earlier desire to captain India. Speaking during a podcast, Yuvraj Singh also revealed why many senior cricketers didn’t play in the 2007 T20 World Cup.

Due to his multiple match-winning performances for the country, Yuvraj Singh is considered to be one of the greatest cricketers from India. The left-hander was a fan favorite and many fans expected him to become the national team captain.

But the explosive left-hander was overlooked by the cricket board for the role of captaincy, and it was given to MS Dhoni.

Yuvraj stated in the 22 Yarns podcast that he expected to captain his national team in the inaugural 2007 T20 World Cup before Dhoni was named captain.

“So probably the seniors thought that they need a break and obviously nobody took the T20 World Cup seriously. I was expecting to captain India in the T20 World Cup and then it was announced MS Dhoni will be the captain,” he said.

When asked if his relationship with Dhoni survived the issue, Yuvraj stated, “Obviously. Whoever becomes captain you got to support the guy whether it was Rahul, whether it was Sourav Ganguly, whoever in the future. End of the day you want to be a team man and that’s how I was.”

Yuvraj played a crucial role in winning the 2007 T20 World Cup, helping his national team win the inaugural tournament.
