“Today, former minister and prominent businessman Mohammed Saeed Al Mulla have departed our world. He was one of the faithful men who worked dedicatedly and faithfully to achieve the vision of the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan and his brothers, the rulers of the emirates,” Dr. Gargash said. “With his departure, we lost a national figure who served his country with all honesty and loyalty. My condolences to his family.”

Adani group gets $400 Million in share sale investment from UAE

Adani group
  • Gautam Adani’s conglomerate saw its value plummet by nearly $ 70 billion.
  • His group issued a 413-page response in an attempt to restore trust in the corporate empire.
  • The response was ineffective, as stock prices for most group companies continued to tumble.

Adani group, Billionaire Gautam clung to a $ 400 million (Rs 3,260 crore) investment by Abu Dhabi’s International Holding Co. in its flagship firm’s share sale to restore confidence in the conglomerate, which saw its value plummet by nearly $ 70 billion after a tiny New York short seller issued a damning report.

Gautam Adani, 60, who was the world’s third richest man until a day before Hindenburg Research released its report on January 24 that raised concerns about its debt levels and alleged stock manipulation, accounting fraud, and the use of tax havens, has slipped to eighth place, closing the gap with rival Mukesh Ambani, whom he surpassed in April last year, to just $4 billion.

His group issued a 413-page response to the Hindenburg report late Sunday night in an attempt to restore trust in the corporate empire, but it was ineffective, as stock prices for most group companies continued to tumble and crucial dollar bonds fell to new lows on Monday.

The US short seller denied that its report on Adani Group’s wrongdoing was a “calculated attack” on India, claiming that a “fraud” cannot be disguised by nationalism or a bloated response that neglected major allegations.

Hindenburg published the analysis on January 24, the same day that Adani Enterprise Ltd’s 20,000-crore follow-on share offering became available to investors. While anchor investors poured about 6,000 crore into the FPO on that day, public subscription remained modest, with only 3% of the shares on offer being subscribed to as of Monday evening, according to the report.

The offer expires on January 31, and the retail investor part, which accounts for the majority of the FPO, is only 4% enrolled.

Former UN Secretary-General urges for climate action over ‘visions’ at COP28

UN Secretary-General
  • Ban asked the COP28 presidency to think about “harmonization” between adaptation, loss, and damage.
  • Ban signed an agreement with Dubai Cares.
  • This year should focus on action rather than aspirations, Ban says.

Climate talks in the United Arab Emirates this year should focus on action rather than aspirations, according to former UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, who visited the oil-rich Gulf country.

“Many countries and many people have already provided visions, so we may not require any more,” he said on Saturday in Dubai.

“We need a COP of solutions and a COP of action.”

The South Korean ambassador, who co-chairs the Ban Ki-moon Centre for Global Citizens, was in the UAE this weekend to announce a cooperation with Dubai Cares, a civil society organization focusing on teaching “green skills” to youth.

The most recent UN climate talks, held in Egypt in November, concluded with a historic agreement to establish a “loss and damage” fund to compensate the costs incurred by developing nations as a result of climate-related natural disasters and delayed effects such as sea level rise.

However, observers were unhappy that little progress had been made in lowering greenhouse-gas emissions from fossil fuels.

Ban asked the COP28 presidency to think about “harmonization” between adaptation, loss, and damage.

Developing countries

“We must assist developing countries in adapting to new conditions… (but) what about the situations that have already been destroyed and lost?” he said.

“We must assist them in recovering from this loss and damage.”

The UAE, a major petroleum producer, and exporter, appointed the chairman of its national oil corporation to preside over this year’s COP28 climate negotiations, provoking outrage from environmentalists.

The wealthy country maintains that oil is still essential to the world economy while promoting carbon capture – extracting carbon dioxide, the principal greenhouse gas, as fuel is burned or from the air.

During his visit, Ban signed an agreement with Dubai Cares to start an environmental training program for adolescents.

During the signing ceremony, Tariq Al Gurg, chief executive and vice chairman of Dubai Cares, told that the alliance aims to teach 10,000 young people.

“There is no answer to climate without education. We shall suffer if education is not accompanied by climate change. That is why those two must marry “Al Gurg stated.

Top U.S. Treasury official to warn UAE, Turkey over sanctions evasion

U.S.
  • Turkey’s refusal to approve Sweden’s and Finland’s NATO bids have irritated Washington.
  • Washington will continue to aggressively enforce its sanctions.
  • Nelson will discuss the Treasury’s efforts to crack down on Russian efforts to avoid sanctions and export controls.

The U.S. Treasury Department’s top sanctions official on a trip to Turkey and the Middle East next week will warn countries and businesses that they could lose U.S. market access if they do business with entities subject to U.S. curbs as Washington cracks down on Russian attempts to evade sanctions imposed over its war in Ukraine.

From January 29 to February 3, Brian Nelson, undersecretary for terrorism and financial intelligence, will travel to Oman, the United Arab Emirates, and Turkey to meet with government officials, businesses, and financial institutions to reiterate that Washington will continue to aggressively enforce its sanctions.

“Individuals and institutions operating in permissive jurisdictions risk potentially losing access to U.S. markets on account of doing business with sanctioned entities or not conducting appropriate due diligence,” the spokesperson said.

Nelson will discuss the Treasury’s efforts to crack down on Russian efforts to avoid sanctions and export controls imposed as a result of its brutal war against Ukraine, Iran’s destabilizing activity in the region, the risks of illicit finance undermining economic growth, and foreign investment while in the region.

The visit is the latest by a senior Treasury official to Turkey to discuss sanctions, following a series of warnings from Treasury and Commerce Department officials last year as Washington increased pressure on Ankara to ensure the implementation of US sanctions against Russia.

STRAINED RELATIONS

Most recently, Turkey’s refusal to approve Sweden’s and Finland’s NATO bids have irritated Washington, while Ankara is dissatisfied that its request to buy F-16 fighter planes is becoming increasingly dependent on whether the two Nordic nations can join the alliance.

Nelson will travel to Ankara, Turkey’s capital, and Istanbul, the country’s financial center, on February 2-3. According to the spokeswoman, he would warn firms and banks to avoid transactions involving potential dual-use technology transfers that could be exploited by Russia’s military in the future.

Dual-purpose objects can serve both commercial and military purposes.

Since the invasion, which has killed and injured hundreds and destroyed Ukrainian cities, Washington and its allies have slapped three rounds of sanctions against Moscow.

Turkey has denounced Russia’s invasion and has dispatched armed drones to Ukraine. Simultaneously, it rejects Western sanctions on Russia and maintains tight ties with both Moscow and Kyiv, its Black Sea neighbors.

It’s also increased trade and tourism with Russia. Some Turkish corporations have purchased or attempted to purchase Russian assets from Western partners who are withdrawing owing to the sanctions, while others hold huge assets in the nation.

However, Ankara has stated that foreign sanctions will not be ignored in Turkey.

Washington is also concerned about Iranian sanctions evasion.

The US sanctioned famed Turkish businessman Sitki Ayan and his network of companies last month, accusing him of acting as a middleman for oil transactions and money laundering on behalf of Iran’s Revolutionary Guard Corps.

Nelson will observe the country’s “poor sanctions compliance” while in the UAE, according to the spokeswoman.

Washington has imposed a number of penalties on UAE-based corporations for evading Iran-related restrictions, and on Thursday designated a UAE-based aviation firm for its support of Russian mercenary group the Wagner Group, which is fighting in Ukraine.

Israeli minister visits UAE ahead of Netanyahu trip

Israeli minister
  • Israeli minister made a secret trip to the United Arab Emirates.
  • First visit to the UAE by an Israeli minister.
  • Israel and the UAE normalized relations in 2020.

According to Israeli media, an Israeli minister made a secret trip to the United Arab Emirates ahead of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s possible visit to the Gulf state.

Ron Dermer, Israel’s strategic affairs minister, visited Abu Dhabi on Sunday and met with senior officials.

Tzachi Hanegbi, National Security Adviser, accompanied Dermer.

This would be the first visit to the UAE by an Israeli minister since the new Israeli government took office at the end of December.

Netanyahu had planned to visit the UAE soon after assuming the prime ministership, but the arrival of his provocative national security minister, Itamar Ben-Gvir, at the Al-Aqsa Mosque compound in January forced the cancellation of the trip.

The UAE issued a public condemnation of Ben-Gvir’s actions at the time.

During his visit to the UAE, Dermer attempted to assuage some of the UAE government’s concerns about Ben-Gvir and other far-right members of the Israeli government.

Israel and the UAE normalized relations in 2020 under the Abraham Accords, which were brokered by the US, and have since strengthened their ties, including by signing a free trade agreement in May.

When the agreements were signed, Dermer was Israel’s ambassador to the United States.

Naftali Bennett, a right-wing politician who will succeed Netanyahu as Prime Minister in 2021, was the first Israeli leader to visit the UAE in December of the same year, before returning for talks in June of the following year.

Despite Israel’s continued occupation of Palestinian territory and near-daily raids in the occupied West Bank, which have already killed 17 Palestinians this month, the UAE is central to Israel’s strategy of normalizing relations with Arab governments.

GCC denounce Quran burning in Stockholm

GCC
  • An extremist burned of the Holy book Quran in Stockholm in front of the Turkish consulate.
  • UAE, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, and Qatar make up the GCC.
  • Al Hajraf pleaded with the world community to take action.

Cairo: The six-nation Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) has denounced the extremist’s burning of a Holy Quran in Stockholm, Sweden, and issued a caution against upsetting Muslims.

The GCC claimed that Nayef Al Hajraf, the organization’s secretary general, had denounced the Swedish government for permitting an extremist to burn the Holy Quran in front of the Turkish embassy in Stockholm since this would inflame and antagonize Muslims all over the world.

Al Hajraf reaffirmed the GCC’s unwavering stance, emphasizing the need to “promote the ideals of discussion, tolerance, and peaceful coexistence as well as rejecting intolerance and extremism.”

He pleaded with the world community to take action to stop “such rejected acts”.

UAE, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, and Qatar make up the GCC.

The burning of the Quran in Stockholm in front of the Turkish consulate by an extremist was vehemently condemned by the UAE.

Additionally, the ministry emphasized the need of promoting tolerance and coexistence.

Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, and Qatar all denounced the act of burning.

Meanwhile, the Organization of Islamic Cooperation’s Secretary General, Hissein Brahim Taha, stated that he strongly condemned “the heinous deed” of burning the Holy Quran and referred to it as a “provocative action.”

During demonstrations against Turkey and Sweden’s bids to join NATO, an anti-immigrant lawmaker from the far-right fringe on Saturday set fire to a copy of the Quran next to the Turkish Embassy in Stockholm.

UAE
  • Sultan Al Neyadi will depart for ISS for a six-month mission.
  • Al Neyadi is a member of the four-person SpaceX Crew-6 mission.
  • Al Neyadi will be the first Arab astronaut to fly a long-duration space mission.

Dubai: UAE astronaut Sultan Al Neyadi will depart for the International Space Station (ISS) on February 26 for a six-month mission, the Mohammed Bin Rashid Space Centre (MBRSC) announced on Thursday.

Al Neyadi, who will be the second Emirati in space after Hazzaa AlMansoori, will conduct “various scientific experiments and research,” according to MBRSC.

Al Neyadi is a member of the four-person SpaceX Crew-6 mission, which also includes NASA astronauts Stephen Bowen and Warren Hoburg, as well as Roscosmos cosmonaut Andrey Fedyaev. This will be Hoburg’s, Fedyaev’s, and AlNeyadi’s first space mission, and Bowen’s fourth.

The Falcon 9 launch rocket and the Dragon Endeavour spacecraft that will transport the crew to the ISS will take off from NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida’s Launch Complex 39A.

The mission is NASA’s (US space agency’s) sixth crew rotation flight, and it involves a US commercial spacecraft carrying a science expedition aboard the microgravity laboratory.

First Arab on a long space mission

Al Neyadi will be the first Arab astronaut to fly a long-duration space mission. He and AlMansoori, the first Emirati to fly to the International Space Station (ISS) for an eight-day mission in September 2019, have completed European Space Agency (ESA) Columbus training for the SpaceX Crew 6 mission.

Al Neyadi will join Expedition 69 aboard the space station as a flight engineer.

The upcoming mission will also make the UAE only the eleventh country in the world to send astronauts on a long-term mission to space. According to MBRSC, Al Neyadi “will conduct numerous in-depth and advanced scientific experiments as part of the second mission of the UAE Astronaut Programme that will pave the way for future UAE missions and further push the capabilities for a journey beyond Earth.”

Davos 2023: Saudi Arabia to modifies its no-strings assistance

Saudi Arabia
  • The country is changing the unconditional direct grants and deposits.
  • Gulf Arab nations have increasingly shifted toward investing.
  • The kingdom may increase its investments in cash-strapped Pakistan to $10 billion from $1 billion.

The finance minister of Saudi Arabia announced on Wednesday that the country is changing the unconditional direct grants and deposits it previously made to allies.

Mohammed al-Jadaan said at the World Economic Forum in Davos that the kingdom, which is the top oil exporter in the world and a major Arab power, was encouraging the region’s nations to implement economic reforms.

“We used to give direct grants and deposits without strings attached and we are changing that. We are working with multilateral institutions to actually say we need to see reforms,” the minister said.

“We are taxing our people, we are expecting also others to do the same, to do their efforts. We want to help but we want you also to do your part.”

Instead of providing direct financial aid, Saudi Arabia and other Gulf Arab nations like the United Arab Emirates and Qatar have increasingly shifted toward investing.

The kingdom may increase its investments in cash-strapped Pakistan to $10 billion from the $1 billion announced in August, according to Saudi state media, and raise the cap on deposits to the Pakistani central bank to $5 billion.

In June, Saudi Arabia announced plans to lead investments totaling $30 billion, signed deals with Egypt worth $7.7 billion, including one to build a $1.5 billion power plant, and helped an ally struggling with a weakening currency and a lack of foreign currency.

The kingdom also established businesses in Iraq, Oman, Sudan, Bahrain, Egypt, Jordan, and Jordan in order to look for up to $24 billion in investments there.
