One of three tennis players—Serena Williams, Maria Sharapova, and Naomi Osaka—has held the distinction of highest-paid female athlete for the past 20 years. However, Sharapova put up her racket in 2020, Williams retired last year, and Osaka took the year off from tennis to give birth to her daughter Shai and to pause some of her lucrative endorsement commitments.
