The southern Philippine region of Mindanao experienced a magnitude 6.7 earthquake, according to the German Research Center for Geosciences (GFZ).
Authorities have warned of potential damage while there are no immediate reports of casualties. The quake occurred off the shore of Mindanao, near General Santos City, at a depth of 60 km (37.3 miles), as reported by GFZ, which initially recorded the magnitude as 6.9.
Both the Philippine seismology agency PHIVOLCS and the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center stated that no tsunami was expected.
Officials are assessing potential damage to a shopping mall near the quake’s epicenter, with reports of extensive damage.
Residents are advised to remain alert for potential aftershocks while there have been no casualties reported. Earthquakes are common in the Philippines, situated on the seismically active “Ring of Fire” in the Pacific Ocean.
