David McBride: Australian war crimes informant enters guilty plea

  • Australian war crimes informant David McBride enters a guilty plea.
  • He had intended to argue that his disclosure was protected.
  • The information he provided underpinned a series of reports in 2017.

A whistleblower who played a key role in exposing allegations of Australian war crimes in Afghanistan has changed his plea to guilty after being charged with leaking classified information.

David McBride, a former military lawyer, had intended to argue that his disclosure was protected by whistleblower safeguards, but he withdrew that defense after much of his argument was ruled to endanger national security.

McBride, who initially faced five charges, entered a guilty plea on three charges of stealing and unlawfully sharing secret military information.

The information he provided underpinned a series of reports in 2017 called The Afghan Files, revealing allegations of war crimes committed by Australian forces in Afghanistan.
