Rescue efforts in India made progress as they drilled approximately one-third of the way into the debris of a collapsed highway tunnel where 40 workers have been trapped for five days.

According to Devendra Singh Patwal, a disaster management officer, Drilling had penetrated about 21 meters (70 feet) of debris, with a total distance of nearly 60 meters to cover by Friday morning.

The trapped workers have been provided with food, water, and oxygen through a pipe, and authorities maintain contact with them using walkie-talkies.

The cause of the tunnel collapse in the northern state of Uttarakhand, part of the Char Dham highway project, has not been disclosed.
