  • Millions impacted by Australian network outage for Optus.
  • Over 10 million people and numerous businesses were impacted by the outage.
  • The failure also affected other providers relying on the Optus network.

A network failure at telecommunications firm Optus left millions of Australians without mobile and internet services, causing disruptions in various sectors.

Optus, the country’s second-largest provider, estimated that over 10 million people and numerous businesses were impacted by the outage.

The disruption, attributed to a “technical network fault,” persisted for approximately 12 hours, with services being restored around 18:00 after commencing around 04:00 (17:00 GMT).

The failure also affected other providers relying on the Optus network, such as Amaysim, Aussie Broadband, and Moose Mobile while train services in the state of Victoria were briefly paralyzed.

Customers across Australia experienced difficulties, including the inability to contact emergency services, affecting critical helpline numbers.

The outage had personal consequences for many, with one customer unable to receive updates on her father’s cancer treatment, and another discovering the disruption through her cat’s automatic Wi-Fi-enabled feeder.

Optus CEO Kelly Bayer Rosmarin expressed apologies for the network failure and stated that a comprehensive investigation was necessary to determine the root cause.

She refuted claims by unions that 600 job cuts contributed to the issue, emphasizing that it was a technical network problem. Optus faced a significant data breach, believed to be the largest in Australian history, stemming from a cyber attack last year.
