Kenya’s High Court has extended its order preventing the government from sending police officers to Haiti for a UN-backed mission aimed at addressing the escalating violence in the Caribbean nation.

This decision comes on the heels of a UN warning that Haiti’s security situation has deteriorated even further, with a surge in major crimes.

Kenya had previously offered to lead a multinational force and deploy 1,000 police officers to assist in stabilizing Haiti.

However, earlier this month, the court issued a temporary injunction in response to a case filed by opposition politician Ekuru Aukot, who argued that the constitution does not allow for the deployment of police officers outside the country.

Aukot also expressed intentions to take legal action against the cabinet for disregarding the court order and approving the deployment.

Formal consent from Kenya’s parliament is required before the mission can proceed. Nevertheless, a legal team representing parliament has stated that members of parliament cannot deliberate on the matter until the court order is lifted.

In light of months of escalating gang violence, Haiti’s Prime Minister Ariel Henry had called for international assistance, citing the overwhelming challenges faced by his government.
