Big Boss Kannada : Varthur Santhosh Arrested Over Tiger Claw Drama

  • Big Boss Kannada contestant Varthur Santhosh arrested for wearing tiger claw pendant.
  • Charged with possession and display of animal part, a violation of Indian law.
  • Forest officials confirmed the tiger claw on the pendant.

A contestant on the popular Indian version of Big Brother, known as Big Boss Kannada, found himself in legal trouble when he was arrested for wearing a pendant made from a tiger claw while on the show.

Varthur Santhosh, a businessman, was taken into custody on October 22.

He faces charges related to the possession and display of an animal part, a violation of Indian law.

Upon being notified of Mr. Santhosh’s tiger claw pendant, authorities from the forest department in the southern Indian state of Karnataka initiated an investigation following a complaint.

Forest officials confirmed the tiger claw’s presence on the pendant during their inquiry. Despite the arrest, Mr. Santhosh claimed the pendant was a family heirloom that had been passed down through generations.

India’s wildlife protection law stipulates that the possession and display of animal parts can lead to imprisonment ranging from three to seven years.

This stringent law aims to protect endangered species like tigers. Over the past century, the global population of wild tigers has drastically declined by approximately 95%, according to data from the World Wide Fund for Nature.

Tigers hold special significance in India, where they are the national animal, and the country hosts nearly 75% of the world’s tiger population, according to the federal government.

Efforts to conserve the tiger have been ongoing since the 1970s when India launched Project Tiger due to a significant decrease in tiger numbers.

These efforts include hunting bans and awareness campaigns in villages. Recent data shows a positive increase in the tiger population since 2006. In the last government tiger census report, it was noted that India’s tiger population had grown to 3,167, which was 200 more than in 2018.

However, the report also highlighted that tiger populations had gone extinct in various areas, emphasizing the need for continued conservation efforts in states like Jharkhand and Andhra Pradesh.
