IHC extends Nawaz Sharif’s bail in Al-Azizia, Avenfield references till Oct 26

Islamabad High Court (IHC) extends Nawaz Sharif’s bail in Al-Azizia, Avenfield references till October 26.

The court restrained authroties from arresting Nawaz Sharif in these cases till October 26.

Azam Nazir Tarar, representing former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, requested the restoration of appeals in the Al-Azizia and Avenfield references.

Accountability Court had previously terminated Nawaz Sharif’s status as an absconder, and Tarar urged the court to first hear their pleas regarding the reinstatement of appeals.

The Chief Justice noted that the court would require satisfying arguments.

Tarar emphasized that Nawaz Sharif’s absence from court was not deliberate, as he had left the country with the court’s permission.

Medical reports were also submitted to the court.

Justice Mian Gul Hasan Aurangzeb reviewed the petitions, and the Chief Justice asked Nawaz Sharif to justify his absence and non-appearance in court.

The court questioned whether the accused could return to the country and request the reopening of appeals.

They also clarified that the revival of appeals was not a routine matter, and it required justifications.

Regarding the extension of security bonds, the Chief Justice emphasized that it was not a routine matter but a show case.

The court decided to issue a notice to NAB and requested their response. If NAB disagreed, they were expected to provide a justification.

Azam Nazir Tarar proposed extending Nawaz Sharif’s protective bail, and the Prosecutor General of NAB had no objections to the extension.

Justice Mian Gul Hasan Aurangzeb mentioned a landmark judgment given by the court five years ago, raising questions about NAB’s changing stance.

He expressed confusion over NAB’s current position, considering its previous actions.

The court further discussed whether NAB was suggesting that the charges of corrupt practices should remain, but Nawaz Sharif should be left out.
