When people are bored, many like to learn something new, while others do more dangerous things. This man from the UK is the second type. He chose to grow the most dangerous plant in the world at home because he was bored.

Daniel Emlyn-Jones’ plant can cause months of misery and suicidal thoughts with just one sting.

Dendrocnide moroides is native to Australia and Malaysia. If its hair is not removed, the “suicide plant” (Gympie-Gympie) can torture its victims for a long period. Daniel leaves the plant in a cage with a “danger” sign.

The gardener told The Independent, “I just thought it would add a bit of drama to my gardening. You can get seeds on the internet, you have to be careful it doesn’t spread out of a contained area though, so I keep it potted in my front room. I got my seeds from a company in Australia, it cost something like sixty Australian dollars, so it wasn’t cheap. I have always liked plants though, I just have got a bit bored with geraniums. According to the internet, the Aborigines supposedly used it to help treat arthritis. I’m not sure how true that is, or how that would work.”

Daniel warned about grabbing the plant, describing its sting. It barely stung him. Through his heavy-duty elbow-length gloves’ cloth back. It didn’t bother him.

Australia has four species of stinging trees. Three other Urticaceae species are related.

The giant stinging tree, which is called Dendrocnide excelsa, the shiny leaf stinging tree, which is called Dendrocnide photinophylla, and the Atherton Tableland stinger, which is called Dendrocnide cordata, are the three species.

Gympie-Gympie and Atherton Tableland Stinger are most similar. Dendrocnide moroides has the worst sting. Possibly the most excruciating Australian plant sting.
