- Ireland beat England by five runs (DLS) at the MCG on Wednesday.
- This is Ireland’s first win over England in Twenty20 internationals.
- It also shakes up Group 1 of ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2022 after Australia lost to New Zealand earlier in the day.
Ireland once again showed their strength in ICC events on Wednesday, when they beat England by five runs (DLS) at the MCG.
After two wins in ODIs, this is the first win over England in T20Is. It also shakes up Group 1 of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2022 after defending champions Australia lost to New Zealand earlier in the day.
The smash-and-grab win over their neighbors is just one of many surprising things that have happened in the T20 World Cup over the years.
Ireland defeated Bangladesh, 2009
Two years after their shocking Cricket World Cup win over Pakistan on St. Patrick’s Day, Ireland turned their attention to the 2009 T20 World Cup to show how good they were with white balls.
Ireland played Bangladesh in their first T20 World Cup match. Both teams seemed to enjoy the Trent Bridge track. Even though the men in green gave up 137 runs in the end, they were still confident.
In response, Ireland’s best batsmen came out. Niall O’Brien, the older brother, set the tone with 40 from 25 balls, and Kevin O’Brien, the younger brother, won the game in the penultimate over with 39* off 17 balls.
Hong Kong defeated Bangladesh, 2014
When Tanwir Afzal caught Tamim Iqbal and Sabbir Rahman in the first over, the Chittagong crowd was so shocked that Hong Kong almost pressed the mute button.
At 85/3, it looked like the hosts had turned things around, but spinners Nadeem Ahmed (4/21) and Nizakat Khan tore through a helpless middle order that didn’t have any answers. With the help of good catches from keeper Jamie Atkinson and outfielder Babar Hayat, their opponents were only able to score 109 runs.
Scotland defeated Bangladesh, 2021
On the first day of T20I 2021 in Oman, there was not only an all-time upset, but also maybe one of the best comebacks in T20I h
istory. The men in purple were in danger at 53/6, but Chris Greaves, who had just made his debut a few days before, saved them.
Netherlands defeated England, 2014
Five years after their loss in 2009, the same thing happened again, but this time it was even worse because England had already been knocked out of the competition.
Stephan Myburgh moved things along on a slow surface, but Ravi Bopara and England got a break when he hit a fielder to fielder. After being down 110/2, England got the Dutch back to 133/5. The Dutch would have been upset that their finish was so slow.
