New army chief to be appointed next month, says defence minister

ISLAMABAD: Defence Minister, Khawaja Muhammad Asif has lauded the role of the Armed Forces for getting Pakistan removed from the grey list of the Financial Action Task Force (FATF), global anti-terror finance group.

Talking to media in Sialkot on Saturday, he said Pakistan’s removal from the FATF grey list was a great success for the country.

Khawaja Asif said Pakistan Army had rendered unprecedented sacrifices for the peace and stability of the country.

About appointment of next army chief, the defence minister said it would be made next month as per law and the constitution.

He said Pakistan Tehreek e Insaf (PTI) Chairman Imran Khan used donated money to the cancer hospital for his political purposes.

Khawaja Asif said general elections would be held on their scheduled time.

A day ago, Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General Qamar Javed Bajwa had announced that he was retiring after five weeks and would not take extension.

According to the sources, Qamar Javed Bajwa had said that the army would not play any role in politics.

It is pertinent to here that the COAS General Qamar Javed Bajwa is retiring on November 29 after the completion of extended term.

On October 20, Belgian Ambassador Charles Joseph M Delogne had called on COAS Chief General Qamar Javed Bajwa in Rawalpindi, media wing of the armed forces, Inter Services Public Relations (ISPR) said.

During the meeting, matters of mutual interest, regional security situation and enhanced bilateral as well as defence cooperation were discussed.

The visiting dignitary, Belgian ambassador, had expressed his grief over the devastation caused by floods in Pakistan and offered sincere condolence for the families of the victims.
