Police in Spain announced on Friday that they had detained a Pakistani couple who were believed to have murdered their own daughter in Pakistan after she wed someone else without their consent.
Following the murder in April 2020, Pakistani officials obtained an international arrest order for the pair, according to a statement from Spain’s National Police.
According to the statement, investigators think the pair “kidnapped and then murdered their own daughter in Pakistan because she married a person they did not like.”
A warrant was issued for the couple, who had fled to Spain, when the woman’s husband informed Pakistani authorities of what had occurred.
Following a tip from Pakistani authorities that the couple was now residing there, Spanish police detained the 67-year-old man and 51-year-old lady on Saturday near their home in Logrono, the regional capital of the northern La Rioja wine-producing area.
When the couple later appeared before Spain’s National Court, the ruling that they should be detained in jail until their deportation to Pakistan was made.
They apparently owned a store in the heart of Logrono that provided phone and internet services. According to the national statistics agency INE, there are around 100,000 Pakistanis living in Spain.
