Russia announces first case of monkeypox virus

  • The first case of the monkeypox virus was registered in Russia.
  • The person infected was isolated immediately.
  • Several European nations have also registered the cases.

Russia announced on Tuesday that it had identified the country’s first case of monkeypox in a man returning from a vacation to several European countries.

“The infection was found in a young man who came back from a trip through European countries and went to a medical facility with a characteristic rash,” health watchdog Rospotrebnadzor said in a statement.

According to the report, the individual has been isolated in a hospital and has a “mild” version of the sickness.

“Contact persons have been established, they are being monitored by doctors,” the statement said.

The early diagnosis of the man’s sickness “helped to prevent further spread of the infection,” according to the report.

Since early May, monkeypox infections have been observed outside of the West and Central African nations where the illness has long been endemic.

Britain, Spain, and Germany also have reported verified cases.
