LAHORE: Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif on Tuesday directed that a summary recommending a decrease in petroleum prices be circulated, as the government has chosen to pass on the advantage of lower oil prices on the international market to consumers.

The prime minister, who was chairing a meeting, stated that the government will pass on the whole advantage to consumers who had been suffering as a result of the spike in fuel prices. He requested that the ministries of finance and petroleum provide a report for his approval, noting that the people deserved assistance after going through terrible circumstances.

He informed the gathering that the government will lower oil prices openly in line with the world market, as a present to the people on the occasion of Eid-ul-Azha, according to a PM Office statement. He stated that the current government will continue to give relief to those affected by the previous government’s inflation. He stated that the administration will make more improvements to the people’s life by the Grace of Allah Almighty.

Russia seeks Iran drones after losses in Ukraine: White House

A senior US official said Tuesday that Russia’s plan to acquire hundreds of combat drones from Iran shows its urgent need to reinforce due to heavy losses four months after invading Ukraine. John Kirby, a spokesman for the national security council, said the deal, revealed by the White House on Monday, also shows Iran’s willingness to support Moscow’s war on Ukraine.

But he said supply the drones would not necessarily affect US ongoing attempts to negotiate a return to the 2015 six-party deal to prevent Tehran from developing nuclear weapons.

“We continue to want to see a nuclear deal that takes Iran’s nuclear ambitions, at least its nuclear weapons ambitions, off the table,” Kirby said.

On Monday the White House revealed intelligence that Russia and Iran are moving quickly on a drone supply pact, which comes as Russia forces face stiff Ukrainian resistance in their push to consolidate control of eastern and southern Ukraine.

“The Iranian government is preparing to provide Russia with up to several hundred UAVs (unmanned aerial vehicles), including weapons-capable UAVs, on an expedited timeline,” White House National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan told reporters.

“Our information further indicates that Iran is preparing to train Russian forces to use these UAVs, with initial training sessions slated to begin as soon as early July,” he said.

Queen gives UK’s health service top award, praises Covid vaccine rollout

Britain’s Queen Elizabeth II on Tuesday awarded the George Cross to the state-run NHS; for its work over the past 74 years and praised its Covid-19 vaccine rollout.

The George Cross is the highest non-military award for gallantry bestowed by the British government.

The queen presented the medal to health leaders from across the UK. They were joined at the ceremony by frontline workers, who nursed the country through the pandemic.

The latter included May Parsons, the nurse who delivered the first shot of the world’s Covid-19 vaccine rollout.

The nurse told the queen: “We’re terribly, terribly proud of the vaccination roll-out.”

“Yes, it was amazing,” she replied.

Britain was the first country in the world to deploy an approved Covid-19 vaccine.

The 96-year-old head of state was joined by her son and heir Prince Charles; at the ceremony in Windsor Castle, the queen’s residence west of London.

She has stepped back from public duties since a bout of ill health last year left her with mobility issues; but she appeared well on Tuesday, albeit in need of a walking stick.

Michael Vernon, the royal official responsible for organising ceremonial events; praised the NHS for the work it has done since it was founded in 1948.

“Over more than seven decades, and especially in recent times, you have supported the people of our country with courage; compassion and dedication, demonstrating the highest standards of public service.”

“You have our enduring thanks and heartfelt appreciation,” he told the ceremony.

WHO warns Covid-19 pandemic ‘nowhere near over’

Fresh surges of Covid infections show the pandemic is nowhere near over; WHO’s chief lamented Tuesday, warning that the virus is running free.

Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said he was in worry that case numbers were shooting up; putting more strain on health systems and workers.

The number of Covid cases reported to the WHO increased 30 percent in the past two weeks; driven by sub-variants of the Omicron strain and the lifting of control measures.

“New waves of the virus demonstrate again that Covid-19 is nowhere near over. As the virus pushes at us, we must push back,” he insisted.

He told a news conference that as transmission increases, governments must also deploy tried-and-tested measures like mask-wearing and improving ventilation.

“Sub-variants of Omicron, like BA.4 and BA.5, continue to drive waves of cases; hospitalisation and death around the world,” Tedros said.

“Surveillance has reduced significantly — including testing and sequencing — making it increasingly difficult to assess the impact; of variants on transmission, disease characteristics, and the effectiveness of counter-measures.”

Furthermore, tests, treatments and vaccines are not in deployment effectively.

“The virus is running freely and countries are not effectively managing the disease burden based on their capacity;” he said, both in terms of hospitalisation of acute cases and the expanding number of people with Long Covid.

Russia and Ukraine to hold Black Sea grain talks in Turkey

Its shipments have been blocked by Russian warships and mines that Kyiv has laid across the Black Sea.
Ukraine has recaptured Snake Island in Black Sea allowing it to resume grain shipments to Romania.

Russian and Ukrainian delegations were due to meet with UN diplomats in Istanbul; on Wednesday in a bid to break a months-long impasse over stalled grain deliveries across the Black Sea.

The four-way meeting with Turkish officials comes as food prices soar around the world due to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

Ukraine is one of the world’s biggest exporters of wheat and other grain.

But its shipments have been blocked by Russian warships and mines that Kyiv has laid across the Black Sea.

NATO member Turkey — on good terms with both Russia and Ukraine — has spearheaded efforts to resume the grain deliveries.

Turkish officials say they have 20 merchant ships waiting in the Black Sea; that could be loaded quickly with Ukrainian grain.

Turkish Defence Minister Hulusi Akar said on Tuesday that the meeting would involve; the three countries’ military delegations and a team from the United Nations.

“Military delegations from the Turkish, Russian and Ukrainian defence ministries; and a delegation of the United Nations, will hold talks tomorrow in Istanbul; on the safe shipment to international markets of grain waiting in Ukrainian ports,” Akar said.

Long a flashpoint for sectarian tensions, the July 12 marches and lighting of massive bonfires commemorate William of Orange’s rout of the deposed Catholic king James II at the Battle of the Boyne in 1690, and comes as the restive province wrestles with political crisis.
