AUSTRALIA: Thousands of Australians joined loud rallies over the US Supreme Court’s decision to abolish women’s fundamental right to abortion on Saturday.
Last week, the Supreme Court overturned the Roe v. Wade decision in 1973. This means that each state can again ban abortion.
Approximately 15,000 women and men marched through Melbourne during the largest rally in Australia, carrying signs such as “I borrowed this sign from my grandmother” and “Everyone deserves the right to bodily autonomy.”
“We are here to stand up for women’s rights in Australia and around the world. Millions of women in the United States have had their rights stripped from them and we are angry about that,” Liz Walsh, one of the protest’s Melbourne organisers, stated.

Australia, like the United States, has state-level abortion legislation. In 2019, the last state to legalise abortion was New South Wales, which has the most people in the country.
The time limit after conception for obtaining a surgical abortion and the availability of abortion services vary from state to state, with some providing greater access to public health care than others. The state of South Australia prohibits abortion clinics.
