KARACHI: A plea has been filed in Karachi City Court against defamation of donkeys by comparing them with corrupt politicians.
The applicant said Barrister Akhtar Hussain Sheikh had compared politicians with donkeys in a Facebook video on 26, during a political campaign in Larkana, which went viral on social media. He approached the court upon the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) Cybercrime Wing’s not taking action on his complaint.
The petitioner said donkey is an innocent animal, so why they were compared to politicians. He said donkey is a hardworking animal, which does not hurt anyone.
“Comparing politicians to donkeys has affected the reputation of donkeys. The language used by the accused against donkeys is against the social values. It is unfair to associate a donkey with corrupt politician,” he said.

The petitioner said disrespecting animals was violation of the animal laws. He requested the court to direct the FIA to lodge and case in this regard. He also pleaded that the suspect should be ordered to acknowledge his mistake and withdraw his words in written form.
The court has sought the FIA Cybercrime Wing’s response on the plea on July 5.
Earlier in June, a judge of a New York court, citing the landmark decision of the Chief Justice of Islamabad High Court (IHC) Athar Minallah in the case pertaining to an elephant, had said that an elephant kept in the Bronx Zoo for decades should be kept in the wild.
“It has a legal right to live in the wild,” the NY judge had said while hearing a plea filed by the animal rights group, Non-Human Rights Project.
The New York State Court of Appeals, in its June 14 ruling, had referred to the IHC CJ’s verdict, who on May 20, 2020, had directed to transfer the lone elephant, Kaavan, and other animals to their respective sanctuaries from the Marghazar Zoo.
