
According to Lyon & Turnbull, the world’s biggest bottle of whiskey, dubbed “The Intrepid,” sold for around $1.4 million.
In September 2021, the bottle was awarded the Guinness World Record for its height of 5 feet 11 inches. It holds 311 litres or 82.16 US gallons. That’s enough for 5,287 whiskey sours produced with 2 ounces of whiskey apiece, or 444 regular bottles.
The spirit is a 1989 Macallan single malt that was aged in wood barrels for 32 years before being bottled. In 2021 at Macallan’s Scotland distillery. According to the auction house, it is light gold in colour and has a pleasant flavour with apple undertones.
According to Lyon and Turnbull, it was sold to an overseas collector on Wednesday.
Fah Mai, a Thailand-based investment corporation, and Rosewin Holdings, a London-based organisation that invests in whiskey and other spirits. Collaborated on the Intrepid project.
According to the auction house, the project’s founder, Daniel Monk, was motivated by his father’s “love for adventure and travel”. Eleven explorers, including Ranulph Fiennes and Robin Knox-Johnston, are featured on the bottle’s packaging.
According to Lyon, the sale will benefit a number of organisations, including Marie Curie and the Campaign Against Living Miserably (CALM).
The massive bottle isn’t the most expensive whiskey container ever sold. A 60-year-old Macallan that sold for $1.53 million in 2018 received this accolade.
