Death toll rises to 30 in India

Officials reported Friday that the continuing floods in India’s northeastern state of Assam had affected nearly half a million people and killed 30 people so far.

There has been no relief from the state’s continuous flood scenario, which has affected 12 districts, according to the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA).

“With two more deaths recorded in Nagaon district in the last 24 hours, a total of 30 people have died in this year’s floods and landslides in the state,” an ASDMA spokesman stated.

According to officials, 956 villages have been flooded and 47,139.12 hectares of cropland have been destroyed in the affected areas.

66,836 people, including 13,988 children, are being housed in 365 relief camps and distribution centres established up by local authorities in six districts.

During the monsoon season in Assam, floods are an annual occurrence.
