US stocks steady ahead of Fed meeting, jobs data

Early Monday, Wall Street equities were little changed at the start of a busy week that includes an expected interest rate hike by the Federal Reserve as well as major earnings and data announcements.

As the US central bank continues to combat inflation, investors are bracing for a two-day Fed meeting that is expected to end on Wednesday with the announcement of a half-percentage point interest rate hike.

In a note, Charles Schwab investment bank said that markets are “skittish” about the Fed’s stance, adding that “global sentiment continues to be impeded by the ongoing crisis in Ukraine, the recent jump in interest rates, the surging US currency, and slowing economic activity in China.”

The Dow Jones Industrial Average was flat at 32,984.39 after 20 minutes of trading.

The broad-based S&P 500 index fell 0.1% to 4,130.21, while the tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite Index rose 0.3 percent to 12,368.54.

The April jobs report, as well as assessments on the health of the US manufacturing and services sectors, are on the agenda this week.

Pfizer and Starbucks are among the corporations that have released their results.
