British Olympian competes in climbing while pregnant

Shauna Coxsey, Britain’s most decorated competitive climber, has defended her decision to continue competing while pregnant.

The 29-year-old is 38 weeks pregnant with her first child and resigned from competition climbing after the sport’s Olympic debut in Tokyo.

Her decision, however, has sparked some backlash on social media.

“Everyone evaluates risk differently, and I believe that people consider me climbing as dangerous when I am climbing well within my comfort zone,” she explained.

She went on to say: “Walking down the street feels far more dangerous to me. On a bumpy path, I’m much more likely to trip over than on an easy climbing wall.”

Coxsey made history in Tokyo as the first British contestant in the sport, finishing 10th overall despite a back ailment.

Since she was three years old, the two-time World Championship bronze medalist has been interested in the sport.

“My body feels clunky and everything becomes a little achy if I don’t climb for a week or so,” she explained.

“As soon as I get back on that wall and start stretching and moving again, my body, as well as my mental health, feels more connected, good, and strong.”

“I would never put my child in jeopardy.”

“People believe I have the ability to fall and land on my stomach, which I have never done or witnessed before.”

“It’s frustrating that other women are receiving this judgement and choosing to give up something they love and are comfortable with because of the fear of judgement,” she says.

“It’s a terrible situation to be in – it’s bullying.”
