Turkey blocks Russian flights for Syria

Turkey

Turkey has said that it will shut off its airspace to Russian passenger and military aircraft traveling to Syria.

According to local media, Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu said the embargo would be in place for three months.

Russia’s large-scale air campaign in favor of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad is harmed by the move, which forces Russian jets to travel longer routes. Turkey supports anti-Assad rebel organizations in Syria.

Turkey, a NATO member, has abstained from joining the EU and US-led sanctions on Russia for its invasion of Ukraine. However, it has prevented Russian vessels from accessing the Black Sea via its territorial seas.

Turkey’s government is attempting to broker a truce between Russia and Ukraine.

Each year, millions of Russians travel to Turkey for vacation, but the Ukraine crisis is projected to result in a significant decline in trips by Russians and Ukrainians this year.
