The incident happened while Chris Rock was hosting the 94TH Academy Awards on Sunday. The actor Will Smith walked up on stage and slapped Chris Rock across the face in response to a joke Chris Rock made on will’s wife Jada Pinkett Smiths, who was also present in the audience when the incident happened.
“Jada, I love ya. G.I. Jane 2, can’t wait to see it,” Chris said, comparing Jada’s bald head to that of Demi Moore’s character in the movie G.I Jane.
The joke was directed towards Jada Smith for her bald head as Jada Pinkett Smith was diagnosed with alopecia in 2018. She has been quite expressive about her battle with alopecia and how it has damaged her confidence. According to the sources, Chris was unaware of Jada’s condition.
Moments after Chris Rock joked about Jada Smith, Will Smith furiously walked towards him on the stage and slapped the comedian on the face.
At first, the audience assumed this action was a “pre-planned” and part of the joke and hence burst into laughter for a few seconds and became dead silent when Smith returned to his seat and screamed at Chris “Keep my wife’s name out of your F****** mouth. “Chris was left shocked on stage.
Just 40 minutes later after the incident Will Smith was called upon the stage and was congratulated on winning the Oscar for Best Actor, starting a debate all over the world. While giving his speech upon receiving the Oscar, teary eyed Will apologized to the academy and the audience for his behavior, but not to Chris.
He later took to Instagram to extend his apologies to Chris in a statement made on his Instagram account on Tuesday in which he stated that his response was “unacceptable and inexcusable.”
While talking to the audience in his stand-up comedy show Chris said, “I’m still kind of processing what happened, so at some point I’ll talk about that,” he said. “And it’ll be serious and it’ll be funny, but right now I’m going to tell some jokes.”
For the first time after the Oscars incident, Chris came forward to talk about it and had something to say and said it, but without naming anyone.
“I haven’t talked to anyone, despite what you heard,” he said.
Although he did not name anyone, Chris seems to reject any news of reconciling between the two actors.
