Lata Mangeshkar not remembered at Grammy and Oscars awards

Lata Mangeshkar was an Indian playback singer and occasional music composer. She is widely considered to have been one of the greatest and most influential singers in India.

Lata Mangeshkar, the Nightingale of India, who crooned over 25,000 songs during a seven-decade career, was overlooked in the Oscars and, more recently, the Grammys’ Memoriam portions.

But does it really matter for a musician who has never sought Western recognition and has opted out of award shows because she has won too many? In our debut edition of Filmi Gyaan, find out if Lata Mangeshkar’s omission from the Grammys and Oscars’ memoriam portions actually matters.

‘Tu Jahaan Jahaan Chalega, Mera Saaya Saath Hoga. the lines sang by Lata Mangeshkar for the 1966 thriller Mera Saaya, are arguably most fitting for the late singer herself. After weeks in the hospital due to a COVID-19 infection, Lata Mangeshkar died at the age of 92.

Even after her death, Lata didi, as she was affectionately known, remains immortal in her voice, arguably India’s most well-known singer and one whose mellow vocals connect with Indians all over the world, becoming a vital part of their everyday life in its many shades.

Despite her enormous popularity, Lata Mangeshkar was overlooked in the Oscars and, more recently, the Grammys’ memoriam portions.

Needless to say, this sparked a wave of social media activity, with everyone from ordinary people to celebrities defending the award shows for failing to name Lata Mangeshkar in their memoriam portions, and so failing to show proper’respect.
