Baby P’s mother Tracey Connelly granted her release from prison

The mother of Baby P, who died after months of mistreatment, may be released from prison once the Parole Board rules in her favour.

Tracey Connelly was sentenced to life in prison at the Old Bailey in 2009 after admitting to causing or permitting her 17-month-old son Peter’s death at their home in Tottenham, north London, in 2007.

He was known as Baby P in the public eye, and he had over 50 injuries.

Dominic Raab, the Justice Secretary, said he will ask the board to reconsider.

He told the House of Commons: “In light of the Parole Board’s direction to release Tracey Connelly, I should inform the House that having carefully read the decision, I have decided to apply to the Parole Board to seek their reconsideration.”

He made the remark while speaking to lawmakers on a “root and branch” assessment of the parole system.

Recalled to prison

This was Connelly’s fourth Parole Board hearing since being sentenced to a minimum of five years in prison in 2009. The decision was supposed to be made last year, but it was postponed due to a lack of reports and facts. Connelly was released on parole in 2013, but was returned to prison in 2015 for violating her parole restrictions.

Following prior reviews in 2015 and 2017, the Parole Board reviewed her case for the third time in 2019 and declined to either release her or transfer her to an open prison.

“We can confirm that a panel of the Parole Board has directed the release of Tracey Connelly following an oral hearing.

A spokesperson for the Parole Board said: “Parole Board decisions are solely focused on what risk a prisoner could represent to the public if released and whether that risk is manageable in the community.

“Parole reviews are undertaken thoroughly and with extreme care. Protecting the public is our number one priority.”

Who is Tracey Connelly?

Tracey Connelly initially encountered social services when she was a child. She was raised in Islington, north London, by a mother who struggled with alcohol and drugs.

She was sent to boarding school as a teenager, where she earned GCSEs in English and Information Technology (IT). She moved in with Peter’s father, who was 17 years her senior, when she was 16, after lying about her age. The couple eventually married.
