Maria Butina’s remarks will raise concerns among Western military advisers who have warned of Moscow staging a variety of false flag scenarios in order to spread Russia’s war. According to Russian news agencies, she believes NATO is concerned about Poland’s “aggressive independent actions.”
“Remember, there was a campaign with fake maps, on which the Kaliningrad region was depicted as if it were not Russian territory,” Ms Butina added.
During World War II, the Soviet Union captured Kaliningrad, which had previously been part of Poland, Prussia, and Germany.
The port city is named after the province, which is located between Poland and Lithuania. It serves as a home port for Russia’s Baltic Sea fleet.
According to the former head of the Polish ground forces, Kaliningrad is Polish territory, according to the Super Express newspaper.
“It might be worth asking for this Kaliningrad District, which, in my opinion, is part of Polish territory,” he was quoted as saying.
“We have the right to hold a grudge against the territory occupied by Russia.”
NATO member Poland is a staunch ally of neighbouring Ukraine, having welcomed over two million refugees fleeing the conflict.
Poland spent 40 years behind the Iron Curtain and a member of the Moscow-led Warsaw Pact security alliance until communist rule ended in 1989.
It is now the most populous former communist country in the European Union and NATO.
During a visit to Warsaw on Saturday, US President Joe Biden stated that Poland bears a significant responsibility for the humanitarian crisis caused by Russia’s invasion.
Poland has already stated that it will expel 45 Russian diplomats. It had also called for the deployment of armed international peacekeepers to Ukraine.
According to Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, sending peacekeepers to Ukraine could result in a direct confrontation between Russia and NATO.
On Thursday, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky appealed to NATO leaders to increase military support for his country.
He warned that Russian forces would target allies in eastern Europe, including Poland.
To repel Russian troops, Zelenskiy said at a NATO summit in Brussels that Ukraine needed fighter jets, tanks, anti-ship weapons, and improved air defence.
“I am sure you understand that Russia has no intention of stopping in Ukraine,” Mr Zelenskiy said in a video address released by the Ukrainian presidency.
“It aspires to go further. NATO members from the east are being pitted against each other. The Baltic countries. Without a doubt, Poland.”
Moscow has been accused of staging a number of false flag scenarios, with Russian accusations that Kyiv has biological and chemical weapons in an attempt to create a pretext for Russia to use them.
On March 21, US Vice President Joe Biden stated that Putin’s back was against the wall and that he was discussing new false flag operations.
