Varsity’s Teachers Association Secretary General Roshan Ali said that the teachers are facing various issues due to the lagging in issuing selection letters to the teachers.
“The teachers who appeared in the selection boards of 2013 and 2017 and cleared them, are still waiting for their selection letters. The absence of these letters are a necessary part for their further promotion which they truly deserve,” he added.
“Many teachers have retired and others are nearing retirement, while not being promoted based on their experience and tenure. Due to this, the varsity has few permanent teachers who could continue teaching all the subjects resultantly disturbing the academic years of the students.”
He said that the varsity has not had a permanent vice chancellor (VC) for years now, the last permanent VC was dismissed in 2019 by the Court and since then the varsity works under acting VC who usually does not have authority to take decisions regarding matters of the varsity, teachers and the staff members.
He demanded President Arif Alvi to order VC to call for the university’s Senate meeting to resolve issues faced by the teachers, saying that the Senate’s meeting has not been held for around six months where the teachers’ issues could be discussed and resolved.
FUUAST’s Mass-Communication Department, Head of Department Dr Masroor Khanum said that the teachers are in a state of dismay due to the ignorant attitude of the authorities.
“The authorities, a couple of weeks ago, issued a notice to terminate the services of teachers on contracts due to their incomplete qualifications i.e., M.Phil. But the notice was revoked due to a protest by the teachers,” she added.
Now the teachers who cleared the selection boards are demanding for issuing the selection letters so their scale could be upgraded and also a sense of security regarding their jobs being safe, Khanum said.
A member of the association and a teacher at the varsity said that various departments are facing issues to continue completing the syllabus as there are not many teachers in the varsity, he said, adding that the teachers are not being promoted due to the non-issuance of selection letter and selection boards are not held to hire new teachers.
