Content Sikh pilgrims return to India via Wagah border

LAHORE: Close to 2,900 Sikh pilgrims, who were in Pakistan to participate in the 552nd birth anniversary of the founder of their religion Baba Guru Nanak, left for India via the Wagah border on Friday.

According to a spokesman of the Evacuee Trust Property Board (ETPB), the department’s Additional Secretary, Rana Shahid was at the Wagah border to see off the pilgrims.

Pardhan Pakistan Sikh Gurdwara Prabandhak Committee (PSGPC) Sardar Ameer Singh and other board officials were also present.

Leader of Gurdwara Prabandhak Committee Delhi Sardar Balwinder Singh told the media that the pilgrims were returning to their country with love and joy shared by Pakistanis.

“Everyone was over the moon with the exemplary arrangements made by the ETPB during our 10-day stay in the country,” said Singh. He said the entire Sikh community was grateful to Pakistan, especially Prime Minister Imran Khan and ETPB, for taking great care of them during the visit to different holy sites.

Sikh pilgrims converge in Nankana Sahib to celebrate birth anniversary of Baba Guru Nanak

Last week, thousands of Sikh pilgrims from India and across the world converged in Nankana Sahib to celebrate the 552nd birth anniversary of Baba Guru Nanak, the founder of Sikhism.

The birth celebrations of Baba Guru Nanak, which started on November 17 in his birthplace, continued till 26.

The 10-day celebration began with a ritual called ‘Akhand Path, a reciting of some 1,430 pages of Granth Sahib – the holy book of Sikhism.

Pakistan and India have facilitated the Sikh community on the occasion of Baba Guru Nanak’s birth anniversary, despite political tensions. Some 3,000 Sikh pilgrims from India entered Pakistan through the Wagha border on Wednesday to take part in the celebrations.
