The 97th Academy Awards faced backlash after several late stars were left out of the annual ‘In Memoriam’ tribute. Fans were particularly outraged over the exclusion of Gossip Girl actress Michelle Trachtenberg, horror icon Tony Todd, and Hollywood veterans Shannen Doherty and Olivia Hussey.
“Michelle Trachtenberg deserved her flowers!!! #Oscars that’s so sad,” one X user wrote, mourning the Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Ice Princess actress, who was found dead just days before the ceremony at age 39.
Others voiced their frustration, with one user tweeting, “NO Michelle Trachtenberg??? NO Shannen Doherty ??? NO Tony Todd???? I’m SICK #Oscars2025.” Another posted, “Oh f**k y’all for not including Michelle Trachtenberg. So disrespectful #Oscars.”
Horror fans were particularly upset over Todd’s omission, echoing similar outrage from the BAFTAs. “Livid doesn’t cover it. Rest in peace, king 🫶🏻 #Oscars,” a user wrote. Another Reddit thread criticized the Academy for disregarding the genre, stating, “Tony deserved to have his name up there with all the others.”
Todd, known for Candyman, passed away in November 2024 at 69. Doherty and Hussey both succumbed to cancer in 2024 at 53 and 73, respectively.
