FIA arrests human trafficker from Gujranwala

GUJRANWALA: Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) on Wednesday arrested a human trafficker from Gujranwala District of Punjab province.

According to the FIA, the arrested human trafficker collected Rs 9.3 million by pretending to send the innocent husband and wife to the United Kingdom (UK) and then went into hiding.

The victim’s family lodged a complaint with the FIA after the agent went into hiding.

On the information about the presence of the accused in Ayman Abad, the FIA team conducted a raid and arrested the accused and the investigation has been started.

Real-life story that inspired Netflix’s hit show ‘Squid Game’

The global success of Squid Game, Netflix’s most-watched series, is rooted in a stark reality. The dystopian drama, which portrays desperate individuals competing in deadly games for a cash prize, was partly inspired by the 2009 Ssangyong Motor strikes in South Korea, a violent chapter in the country’s labor history.

Director and writer Hwang Dong-hyuk revealed that the struggles of the main character, Gi-hun, a laid-off worker, mirror the plight of Ssangyong employees. “I wanted to show that any ordinary middle-class person in the world we live in today can fall to the bottom of the economic ladder overnight,” Hwang explained.

The Ssangyong strike began after the company announced over 2,600 layoffs, triggering a 77-day factory occupation. Clashes erupted between strikers armed with slingshots and riot police wielding tasers and rubber bullets. Union leader Lee Chang-kun later protested atop a factory chimney for 100 days, enduring extreme conditions and hallucinations.

The strike’s aftermath was devastating, with around 30 workers and their family members dying by suicide or stress-related illnesses. Lee expressed frustration that Squid Game failed to spur real change, saying, “Despite being widely discussed, it’s disappointing that these conversations haven’t led to meaningful outcomes.”

As South Korea grapples with political turmoil, including President Yoon Suk Yeol’s impeachment, Squid Game remains a poignant reflection of systemic inequality and the enduring scars of state violence.

ATC issues notices to 2 suspects in GHQ attack case

RAWALPINDI: An anti-terrorism court (ATC) Rawalpindi has issued notices of 2 suspects in the May 9 General Headquarters (GHQ) attack case.

The court issued notices to the two accused, Muhammad Asim and Shaheer Sikandar, who were absent, and gave them time to appear till January 24.

The court says that if the accused do not appear, they will be declared proclaimed offenders and their properties will be confiscated.

Both the accused are continuously absent in the GHQ attack case.

It should be noted that in the May 9 GHQ attack case, 117 of the 119 accused, including PTI’s nominated founder Imran Khan, have been indicted.

RAWALPINDI: Security Forces killed 13 terrorists in intelligence based operation (IBO) in South Wazirsistan District of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

According to the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), security forces conducted an intelligence based operation in general area Sararogha, South Waziristan District on reported presence of terrorists (khwarij).

During the conduct of operation, own troops effectively engaged khwarij location, as a result of which, thirteen terrorists (khwarij) were sent to hell.

Killed terrorists (khwarij) remained actively involved in numerous terrorist activities against the security forces as well as killing of innocent civilians.

Sanitization operation is being carried out to eliminate any other Kharji found in the area, as security forces of Pakistan are determined to wipe-out the menace of terrorism from the country.

Victims’ rights attorney Gloria Allred confirmed Tuesday that Hutchins’ parents and sister are pursuing damages and plan to depose Alec Baldwin under oath in New Mexico civil court.

Hutchins died during a rehearsal at a Santa Fe film ranch when a pistol Baldwin was handling discharged, killing her and injuring director Joel Souza. Baldwin has denied pulling the trigger, stating, “I pulled back the hammer — but not the trigger — and the revolver fired.”

The criminal involuntary manslaughter charge again st Baldwin was dismissed in July after accusations of withheld evidence. Allred criticized New Mexico Attorney General Raúl Torrez’s decision not to appeal, calling him “the Grinch who stole Christmas.” Torrez’s spokesperson Lauren Rodriguez defended the move, citing “significant procedural irregularities” and a need to focus on other cases.

“We are now able to proceed with our civil case,” Allred said, emphasizing the family’s commitment to holding Baldwin accountable. Hutchins’ sister, Svetlana Zemko, stated, “Mr. Baldwin must be held accountable.”

Richard Perry, a legendary record producer renowned for his versatile sound and numerous chart-topping hits, passed away on Tuesday at 82. He died at a Los Angeles hospital following cardiac arrest, according to his friend, Daphna Kastner.

“He maximized his time here,” Kastner said, describing Perry as “generous, fun, sweet” and a “father friend” who was godfather to her son. “The world is a little less sweeter without him here. But it’s a little bit sweeter in heaven.”

Known as a “musician’s producer,” Perry collaborated with a diverse array of artists across genres, achieving No. 1 hits on pop, R&B, dance, and country charts. His credits include Carly Simon’s You’re So Vain, Harry Nilsson’s Without You, and The Pointer Sisters’ I’m So Excited. He also worked with Barbra Streisand to update her sound and helped revive Rod Stewart’s career through The Great American Songbook series.

“Richard had a knack for matching the right song to the right artist,” Streisand wrote in her memoir My Name is Barbra.

In the 1970s, Perry facilitated a near-Beatles reunion on Ringo Starr’s Ringo album, which featured contributions from all four Beatles. The album, which included the hit Photograph, sold over 1 million copies and peaked at No. 2 on Billboard.
