Control 2 In The Works, While Multiplayer Spinoff Makes Strides

In addition to Control 2, Remedy is working on a multiplayer spin-off.

Remedy‘s latest game, Control, was well-received upon its 2019 release, with both players and reviewers praising it. Fans have eagerly anticipated news of a sequel, and Remedy has now confirmed that Control 2 is in development. However, it’s still in its early stages, and there are indications that a multiplayer spin-off might be released before it.

Control has been a significant success for Remedy, having sold more than 2 million copies. In August 2020, Sam Lake, Remedy’s creative director, hinted at a new game and confirmed that Control and Alan Wake shared the same universe, evident to players of Control’s final DLC expansion, ‘AWE.’

In their latest financial report, Remedy reveals that they are in the initial planning stages for a future Control game with a higher budget. Unfortunately, this suggests that Control 2 is still a long way off, meaning fans of Jesse Faden may need to wait for her next adventure. In contrast, the multiplayer spin-off, referred to as ‘Condor,’ is set in the Control universe and described as a “4-player cooperative PvE (player vs. environment) game.” It promises an exciting experience of battling the Hiss with a team of players. Remedy is partnering with 505 Games on this project, and it appears to be more advanced in development than Control 2.

Additionally, Remedy has entered “full production” on its triple-A game project with Epic Games, which is strongly rumored to be Alan Wake 2.

Alan Wake 2, nearing its release date, has been confirmed by director Sam Lake to be Remedy’s lengthiest game to date. This ambitious sequel, with its story-driven horror elements, distinguishes itself by intertwining the narratives of two characters. Alan Wake 2 promises to provide a significantly longer gameplay experience compared to Remedy’s previous titles, with a duration approximately twice that of their typical games.

Sam Lake revealed that various iterations of the game were explored and discarded during development. Ultimately, the game reflects Remedy’s creative history. Lake expressed that the game is expected to be about double the length of their conventional games.

Traditionally, Remedy’s story-centric games have been relatively short, averaging around 10 hours. Lake acknowledged the need to create longer games to offer players greater value for their money. He cited Control as their longest game to date and stated that the game would surpass it in length, offering more than 20 hours of gameplay.

Lake also emphasized a fundamental shift in the nature of horror between the first Alan Wake and its sequel. While the original was primarily an action-adventure with elements of horror, Alan Wake 2 delves deeper into the survival horror genre. Lake noted that horror has gained wider appeal and is currently experiencing a renaissance.

The game Rust has earned a reputation as a timeless survival experience that unites players worldwide, as they collaborate to construct bases and thrive in its challenging multiplayer environment. Garry Newman, the founder of Facepunch Studios and known for his contributions to Rust and Steam classics like Garry’s Mod, commented on the controversy surrounding the Unity engine, which Rust was originally built upon, and also hinted at Rust 2.

Newman commences by discussing the contentious new payment structure introduced by Unity, stating, “Yesterday Unity announced that starting next year, all games that use their engine will pay a tax per user install.” In his post titled ‘Unity can get f*cked,’ he elaborates on why he finds this fee system problematic, emphasizing that the issue isn’t primarily financial, remarking, “the cost isn’t a big issue to us.”

The source of developers’ discontent lies in the fact that they were not informed or consulted about this change. As Newman notes, “because we didn’t agree to this,” and “We have spent 10 years making Rust on Unity’s engine.” He expresses regret for Facepunch Studios’ reliance on Unity and his belief that Unity is ill-suited to oversee the Unity Engine.

Newman underscores that “The trust is gone” and hints at Rust’s sequel, saying, “We had 10 years to make our own engine and never did.” He concludes his post by confirming that Rust 2 will not be developed using the Unity engine, stating, “Let’s not make the same mistake again. Rust 2 definitely won’t be a Unity game.”

Lotus Cars recently unveiled its latest electric vehicle, the Emeya, at an event held in New York City.
