Women bear additional burdens as a result of Turkey’s earthquake

Turkey
  • Doctor Meltem Gunbegi reconnects women with the basics they feel uncomfortable
  • The death toll from the 7.8-magnitude earthquake has risen to over 46,000 in Turkey.
  • According to a top UN official, the damage alone totaled more than $100 billion.

The shelves of the makeshift clinic, which is little more than an orange storage container, contain everything women are too afraid to ask for on the streets of Turkey’s earthquake zone.

Doctor Meltem Gunbegi reconnects women with the basics they feel uncomfortable discussing in the crowds of mass aid distribution centres, from underwear to period and contraception products.

She also lends a sympathetic ear, assisting the women of Antakya, Turkey‘s devastated southern city, in processing the grief and death they have experienced in the last month.

The death toll from the 7.8-magnitude earthquake has risen to over 46,000 in Turkey and nearly 6,000 in Syria, making it one of the world’s ten deadliest in the last century.

According to a top United Nations official, the damage alone totaled more than $100 billion, with additional funds required for recovery costs.

“Many are shy when it comes to asking for basics, such as bras, wax bands and tweezers, so they come and visit our container,” said the 33-year-old doctor.

According to Gunbegi, more women are experiencing genital problems as a result of poor hygiene conditions in tent cities across the 11 quake-affected provinces.

But she also sees women who are clearly in shock and are too traumatised to think about their own bodies, even when they are pregnant.

“They experienced a lot of death and destruction,” said the doctor. “They really don’t seem to think about the baby. They are in a state of trauma.”

Semire Duman, a 51-year-old earthquake survivor who has been living in a tent for a month, said women have many needs.

“We have no shower, no toilet, no water, nothing,” she told AFP, and then almost whispered: “We don’t have underwear.”

Gazele Sumer, 57, expressed dissatisfaction with the lack of privacy in tents

“We are six people in one tent,” she said. “We sit here, we eat there, we sleep here,” she added.

‘Insecure’

Selver Buyukkeles, an earthquake survivor who works with the Mor (Purple) Solidarity, said that even before the February 6 quake, women bore the brunt of daily burdens such as chores and family care.

They are now attempting to do the same while dealing with personal pain and the acute sense of insecurity that comes with street life.

“Women queue to get food at distribution centres. They cook, and they take care of the children and the elderly. They do the dishes. They do the laundry,” the 28-year-old said.

“Women feel responsible for their family’s situation. They fear a new earthquake and the communal life in tents makes them insecure,” she said.

Despite Turkey’s poor record on the issue, activists and doctors interviewed have not seen any more cases of domestic violence or abuse at this point.

Fidan Ataselim, secretary general of the We Will Stop Femicide Platform, has called for the establishment of “safe shelters” and “prevention centres” for women in affected areas.

We Will Stop Femicide raises awareness about the murder and abuse of women in the predominantly Muslim but officially secular state.

According to data compiled by the platform, at least 327 women were killed and 793 were injured in 2022.

‘Safe zone’

Back at Antakya’s Dostluk (Friendship) park, not far from Gunbegi’s makeshift clinic, volunteers work in shifts to ensure the safety of the 200 women who have taken refuge in dozens of tents.

Others are stationed outside toilets and shower cabins.

“Safe zone for women and LGBT+ here,” proclaims posters in Turkish and Arabic.

The Arabic is a nod to the millions of refugees and migrants who have been living in southern Turkey since the civil war in neighbouring Syria began 12 years ago.

“We have a security system for both women and LGBT+, who are more vulnerable in such disasters,” said Aslihan Keles, 23, one of the volunteers in the park.

On March 8, the official International Women’s Day, Turkish women frequently join marches demanding better lives and protection from domestic violence.

However, things are different in the earthquake zone this year, according to Keles.

“Here, there is an emergency,” she said. “This time, we are in the field — but for a very good cause.”

UN wants China to take action on human rights issues

China
  • The UN human rights chief demanded action from Beijing.
  • Turk has been under pressure from Western nations and rights organizations to take a firm.
  • “All legitimate rights and freedoms of Hong Kong people are better protected”.

Volker Turk, the UN human rights chief, demanded action from Beijing on Tuesday to address “grave concerns” about the human rights situation in China’s Xinjiang province.

Following a bombshell report by his predecessor that cited possible crimes against humanity in the far-western region, Turk has been under pressure from Western nations and rights organizations to take a firm stance on Xinjiang.

Turk stated in his main speech to the current UN Human Rights Council session that the UN is concerned about the protection of minorities such as Uyghurs in Xinjiang and Tibetans.

“Regarding China, we have opened up channels of communication with a range of actors to follow up on a variety of human rights issues,” Turk said.

“In the Xinjiang region, my office has documented grave concerns — notably large-scale arbitrary detentions and ongoing family separations — and has made important recommendations that require concrete follow-up.”

Turk also expressed concern about Hong Kong’s far-reaching national security law, which was enacted in 2020 to quell dissent following massive and often violent pro-democracy demonstrations.

“We also have concerns about the severe restriction of civic space more generally, including the arbitrary detention of human rights defenders and lawyers, and the impact of the National Security Law in Hong Kong,” he said.

The allegations of torture are ‘credible’

Turk made the remarks during his first set-piece speech to the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva since taking office as UN High Commissioner for Human Rights in October.

Turk’s predecessor, Michelle Bachelet, released a long-awaited report on Xinjiang just 13 minutes before her term ended on August 31.

It detailed a slew of human rights violations against Uyghurs and other Muslim minorities, highlighting “credible” claims of widespread torture, arbitrary detention, and violations of religious and reproductive rights.

Beijing strongly denies the allegations and maintains that it is running vocational training centres in the region to combat extremism.

In response to Turk’s speech, Chinese ambassador Chen Xu stated that human rights in Xinjiang were “well protected” as a result of Beijing’s efforts to combat terrorism and radicalization.

“Xinjiang and Tibet enjoy continuous economic growth, harmonious and stable society, constantly improved livelihood, prosperous culture, peaceful co-existence of all religions and unprecedented achievements in human rights development,” he said.

Furthermore, “all legitimate rights and freedoms of Hong Kong people are better protected” since the implementation of the National Security Law.

Western countries, led by the United States, attempted to hold a debate on the Xinjiang report at the Human Rights Council last October.

Despite intense Chinese lobbying among the 47 members of the UN Security Council, nations voted 19-17 against discussing the findings, with 11 abstaining.

US ambassador Michele Taylor urged the council Tuesday to “take action to address the egregious and ongoing violation of human rights in Xinjiang”.

Meanwhile, British Ambassador Simon Manley urged Beijing to “stop denying the facts and engage seriously and constructively” with Turk’s office’s recommendations.

Human Rights Watch’s Geneva director, Hilary Power, urged the council to look into “sweeping rights abuses in China, including in Xinjiang,” noting that this call had “been made by hundreds of other NGOs from all regions and numerous UN experts.”

  • Her great sense of style complements her stunning beauty.
  • Dur e Fishan has established a reputation as a true fashion icon.

One of Pakistan’s most well-known actresses, Dur e Fishan, just shared some breathtaking images from her most recent photoshoot on Instagram, which has the fashion industry all abuzz. Her great sense of style complements her stunning beauty. The fact that Dur e Fishan has established a reputation as a true fashion icon is not surprising, and her most recent images reflect this.

She is wearing a BEATNIK casual flute sleeves polka pattern black shirt in this image, which is the ideal complement to her gorgeous skin and hair. The classic black and white polka motif is complemented by the feminine and elegant flute sleeves. She has dressed the shirt in a casual yet stylish way by pairing it with black jeans and little jewellery. She is a master at mixing classic pieces with new touches.

The second image features she is sporting a deep crimson georgette shirt with a tie collar and big shoulders. The rich red colour looks stunning with her skin tone, and the tie collar adds a touch of sophistication to the ensemble. This dress is ideal for a night on the town because of the dramatic puffy shoulders. Her attention to detail is clear in the way she combined the top with a gold necklace and earrings, completing the ensemble.

She dazzles in the final one wearing a plain silk shirt with a button front. The bold choice of a vivid white hue is masterfully executed by her.

The shirt’s button front design and opulent white silk fabric give it some character. She accessorised the shirt with a straightforward black choker necklace that wonderfully complemented the colour of the shirt.

On the work front, we have seen her in dramas like Dil Ruba, Bharaas, and Pardes.

OST of “Tere Bin” gets accused of copyright by Zee Music Company

Tere Bin
  • Zee Music has claimed that Tere Bin’s OST is a copy of the song ‘Mera Intkam Dekhegi.’
  • The claim led to the removal of some episodes and OST.
  • Tere Bin has achieved impressive television ratings.

Bollywood is frequently accused by Lollywood of openly stealing the plotlines and even the soundtrack of Pakistani dramas. Once more, the bordering nations are engaged in a battle over copyright, but this time Zee Music has claimed that the chorus from the song “Mera Intkam Dekhegi” from the movie Shaadi Mein Zaroor Aana was copied into the OST of the popular serial Tere Bin. The claim led to the removal of multiple episodes and the OST from YouTube. The OST has since been reinstated because it proved that the claim was untrue.

Tere Bin, which features Yumna Zaidi and Wahaj Ali in the key parts, has become a huge hit. Even outside of Canada, it has achieved impressive television ratings and has trended online for each episode.

The OST also received a tonne of attention across all major platforms, garnering 15 million views on YouTube alone. Several people did draw attention to the similarities between the two songs after Zee Music’s recent allegation, but the response has mainly been in favour of the Pakistani drama. Supporters are outraged and that it is unfair. Other people asserted that the cause was envy because the OST and show became popular on YouTube in India.

None of Zee Music and Tere Bin’s production issued an official statement regarding this matter.

Twinkle Khanna expresses her “contentious” viewpoint on sarees

Twinkle Khanna
  • Twinkle Khanna celebrated Holi with photos of herself in a bright green saree from designers Abu Jani and Sandeep Khosla’s label.
  • She made a case for wearing ‘stitched’ sarees, citing the pros.
  • How it would be easier for her daughter Nitara to wear them in the future.

With pictures of herself wearing a vibrant green saree from the line of designers Abu Jani and Sandeep Khosla, Twinkle Khanna wished her followers a “good Holi” on Instagram Today. The video montage included Twinkle displaying her luxury saree and also striking some silly poses as she replicated people’s reaction to her telling them that she gets her sarees ‘stitched’. As opposed to donning a saree the conventional way, Twinkle argued in favor of doing so and highlighted “the positives” of doing so.

In addition to how it would be simple for her daughter Nitara to wear them in the future, Twinkle claimed that wearing “sewn” sarees allows her to “do whatever” she pleases as opposed to wearing a saree in the traditional manner. Twinkle posted the video montage and said, “This is a hot topic! The confession is that I have my saris sewn, Milord.”

She kept on writing, “Let me list the benefits. 1. I don sarees more frequently. 2. My daughter can use it too once I give it to her by simply adjusting two hooks. 3. I just need two safety pins as opposed to six. 4. You don’t have to undo a single pleat; you can perform 11 jumping jacks or Jack himself. 5. It increases the workload for our talented tailor masters. If you are a stitched saree girl, raise your hand; if not, explain why. It is a discussion. Enjoy Holi and remember there is no right side!”

A post shared by Twinkle Khanna (@twinklerkhanna)

Several people agreed with Twinkle, while others tried to convince her. “I find it convenient to wear it in the conventional way,” one commenter on the Twinkle video said. I believe it provides us the freedom to style the pallu anyway we choose. Another person responded, “Yes, I really feel that when you sew them, the elegance of the actual saree is lost. The stitched saree falls extremely weirdly when size increases or lowers, which is the main disadvantage in my situation. Another person added, “One can ride the horses as well in the genuine saree! Simply that you must be aware of proper drapery. Yet one Instagram user seems to be intrigued by Twinkle’s hack. She said, “After I got married, I haven’t been able to wear my sarees because I can’t wear them on my own. During wedding ceremonies, I either had my mother or mother in law to drape me. Please share how the tailors do it and how to get it ironed.”

Twinkle made her acting debut in 1995 with Barsaat, and she gave up acting after the release of Love Ke Liye Kuch Bhi Karega in 2001. With Mrs Funnybones, Twinkle made her writing debut in 2015. She then followed it up with the fiction book Pyjamas Are Forgiving and the anthology of short stories The Legend Of Lakshmi Prasad, both of which were published in 2017. She has two children—a son named Aarav and a daughter named Nitara—with actor Akshay Kumar, with whom she is married.
