SC declares agreement signed for ‘Reko Diq’ is legal

ISLAMABAD: Supreme Court of Pakistan declared the agreement signed with the Canadian company Barrick Gold Corporation for the development of the Reko Diq mine in Balochistan legal.

While announcing unanimous verdict of the SC in the presidential reference seeking its opinion on the matter, the court said that the constitution does not allow legislation against national assets, adding that the provinces can make changes in the laws related to minerals.

“There is nothing illegal in the new agreement,” said the court. It added that the agreement was not against the 2013 verdict given by the top court.

Chief Justice of Pakistan Umar Ata Bandial released the 13-page verdict which was reserved a week ago.

The SC also shared that the agreement was not against the environment.

The court also noted that the experts had informed it that the agreement was inked between the federal and provincial governments. However, once the Balochistan Assembly was taken into confidence they backed the agreement.

“As per the Riko Diq agreement, most workers will be Pakistanis. This is not for a single person but for Pakistan. There is nothing illegal in this agreement,” said the court.

The court stated that Barrick Gold Corporation has assured it that labour laws will be implemented and the company will also fulfil its social responsibility.

“The foreign investment bill is not exclusively for Barrick Gold. The foreign investment bill is for companies that will invest more than $500 million dollars,” said the court.

LAHORE: Former prime minister and Chairman of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf(PTI) Imran Khan has said that there are no laws to catch a white-collar crime in the country and added that corruption damages the states.

Chairman PTI Imran Khan speaking on the occasion of International Anti-Corruption Day said that countries become poor due to elite’s corruption and the biggest problem of poor states is the lack of foreign exchange reserves.

He said that no country can progress until the rule of law is maintained and added that after bringing the powerful under the law, corruption is controlled. A country suffers the most from corrupt practices, he said.

He further said that thieves have come and sat in the country. He said rulers of the last 30 years amended the NAB law as soon as they came and after which they have been given a license to steal.

He said that the money looted from the country and the nation is converted into dollars and sent to foreign countries.

He said that in this country there is no system to catch white-collar crime and corruption and there is no law due to this corruption increases which seems to affect the structure of the country.

On the other hand, Chief Minister of Punjab Pervaiz Elahi while addressing the ceremony on International Anti-Corruption Day said that every government has fulfilled the desire for accountability, those who commit corruption should fear Allah.

He said that Jihad against corruption should be a part of faith and added that if faith is strong then someone will not be able to think of corruption.
