Nintendo Q1 net profit jumps thanks to weak yen

Nintendo Q1 net profit

Nintendo said Wednesday its first-quarter net profit jumped 28 percent on-year, mainly thanks to a weaker yen, but hardware and software sales declined because of a chip shortage and Covid-19 supply issues.

The yen has plummeted more than 10 percent against the dollar this year as sky-high US inflation fuels a widening monetary policy gap — a boon for Japanese companies like Nintendo who sell products overseas.

For the three months to June, the gaming giant posted a net profit of 118.9 billion yen ($893 million), citing the positive impact of “the depreciation of the yen”.

But the company left its annual forecast unchanged, warning that the global shortage of semiconductors and other logistical snarl-ups could hamper console production and distribution.

New game releases got off to a good start, including “Nintendo Switch Sports” and “Mario Strikers: Battle League”, it said, but sales were still no match for the previous year during the pandemic gaming boom.

“Due to the effects of supply shortages in semiconductors and other components among other factors, hardware sales were down 22.9 percent year-on-year, and software sales were down 8.6 percent year-on-year,” Nintendo added.

Soaring demand for indoor entertainment during virus lockdowns sent the company’s profits soaring to an annual record of 480 billion yen in 2020-21.

The firm nearly matched that figure in the last financial year, with its blockbuster Switch console continuing to perform well and strong software sales, especially for “Mario Party Superstars” and the latest Pokemon titles.

But Nintendo now has a more cautious outlook as life returns to normal, causing the gaming craze to slow, and expects to report a 340-billion yen net profit in 2022-23.

Hideki Yasuda, senior analyst at Toyo Securities, warned that the chip shortage and supply problems linked to Covid-19 lockdowns in China would continue to pose headaches for Nintendo.

“The company is feeling significant pressure on its supply chain,” he told AFP before the earnings release. “The Switch is sold out at stores. There is not enough supply.”

It will be “very difficult” for Nintendo to hit its annual production target for the console if the problems continue, Yasuda said, after Switch sales declined 20 percent on-year in 2021-22.

However, a recession in the United States or elsewhere is unlikely to pose a major problem, he said.

“Video gaming doesn’t feel the impact of recessions. When the economy is strong, people buy products. When the economy weakens, people spend more time playing games.”

Pelosi leaves Taipei to sound of Chinese fury By Matt Murphy

Pelosi
  • US walks a diplomatic tightrope with its Taiwan policy – on one hand it recognises only one Chinese government, and on the other maintains a “robust unofficial” relationship with Taiwan.

After meeting with authorities in Taipei, Ms. Pelosi, the most senior US politician to visit in 25 years, left on Wednesday.

However, Beijing was furious with her because she disregarded its travel advisories when she visited the island as part of a larger Asian tour.

Taiwan is a self-governing island, but China views it as a separatist province that will one day reunite with the country.

Wang Yi, China’s foreign minister, said in a statement on Wednesday that “those who play with fire will not come to a good conclusion, and those who harm China will be punished.”

Under the pretence of “so-called democracy,” the United States is infringing on China’s sovereignty, he continued.

With its Taiwan policy, the US straddles a delicate diplomatic line.

It adheres to the “One China” policy, which recognises only one Chinese government and establishes diplomatic ties with Beijing rather than Taiwan.

On the other hand, it also upholds a “strong unofficial” connection with the island that includes providing Taiwan with weaponry for self-defense.

Ms. Pelosi, who currently serves as Speaker of the US House of Representatives, is Vice President Kamala Harris’s heir apparent.

Taiwan places Xi Jinping squarely in the driver’s seat.

China responded to the visit by announcing military exercises it deemed “necessary and just” in waters about 10 miles (16 km) from Taiwan.

The exercises, which will start on Thursday and extend for five days, will involve “long-range live ammunition shooting” and will be conducted in some of the busiest rivers in the world.

On Wednesday, a US official told Reuters that Beijing might try to use the visit to raise tensions. Sun Li-fang, a spokesperson for China’s defence ministry, acknowledged that some of the drills would enter Taiwan’s territorial seas.

Taiwan is facing “deliberately increased military threats,” according to President Tsai Ing-wen. She said that Taiwan “would not back down and that Taiwan will do all it takes to improve its self-defence capabilities.”

Transport Minister Wang Kwo-tsai said Taipei was working with its neighbours, Japan and the Philippines, to find alternate aircraft routes. Taiwan’s port authorities have asked ships to find alternate ways to avoid the drills.

It comes after days of rising tensions, during which Chinese jets have already flown as far as the median line, which serves as an unofficial boundary between China and Taiwan in the waters between them.

Taipei, the capital of Taiwan, is currently experiencing a full-blown Pelosi love fest.

They have been analysing every aspect of her appearance, including the colour of her clothing, the height of her heels (supposedly unusually high for an 82-year-old), and the fact that she “looked like Audrey Hepburn in that photo of her with President John F. Kennedy back in 1961.”

On Wednesday, throngs of people waited early outside Taiwan’s parliament in an effort to catch a glimpse of Ms. Pelosi as she emerged.

Almost everyone dismissed concerns about possible retaliation from China.

A 70-year-old guy declared, “China is bluffing.” Beijing may respond in the short term, but the United States will punish Beijing if it overreacts.

A 50-year-old housewife told us, “China shouldn’t bully Taiwan like this.” “This trip is typical; if China keeps acting this way, more nations will turn against it.”

However, this trip is anything but ordinary for China. Beijing views it as a shocking transgression of diplomatic protocol.

Ms. Pelosi commended Taiwan as “inspiration to all freedom-loving people” at a meeting with Ms. Tsai.

The American “determination to preserve democracy here in Taiwan remains iron-clad,” she added.

“America pledged 43 years ago to stand with Taiwan… today our delegation travelled to Taiwan to make it crystal clear we will not back down from our commitment to Taiwan,” Ms. Pelosi continued.

The 82-year-old had previously spoken with Tsai Chi-Chang, the deputy speaker of Taiwan’s parliament.

The trip has faced opposition from the White House, and President Joe Biden stated that the military thought it was “not a smart idea.”

Some pundits even suggested that the visit might force China, which has thus far declined to do so, to give Russia armaments for use in Ukraine.

However, she has received backing from a number of seemingly surprising sources. In a letter supporting the visit, 26 Republican senators signed on.

The letter claimed that “members of the United States Congress, including former Speakers of the House, have travelled to Taiwan for decades,” among its signatories being Senate minority leader Mitch McConnell.

The travel, it continued, was “compatible with the One China policy to which we are committed” in the United States.

Meghan Markle married Prince Harry in order to gain “spotlight”

  • Meghan Markle married Prince Harry for fame, Royal biographer Tom Bower says.
  • Bower believes the former Suits star was unprepared for the realities of royal life when she returned to the U.S. with Prince Harry in 2020.
  • Meghan wanted the title, she wanted the fame, and then go back to California, according to the author.

Meghan Markle married Prince Harry for fame in order to turn the Royal Family into a “Hollywood celebrity game.”

Royal biographer Tom Bower believes the former Suits star was unprepared for the realities of royal life when she returned to the United States with Prince Harry in 2020.

Bower stated on Sunrise, “She [Meghan] voluntarily came to England and married into the Royal Family and she must have known what that required.”

The author added, “She had to be part of the team and support the Queen and play her part. And all she really did was complain because she wanted the spotlight, she wanted to be number one.”

Tom claimed that Meghan “wanted to turn the Royal Family into a Hollywood celebrity game. I think she wanted the title, she wanted the fame, and then go back to California.”

Meghan Markle’s hopes of playing the ‘Hollywood celebrity game’ were dashed, according to the author.

Rising interest rates lift Commerzbank profits

Commerzbank profits
  • Commerzbank profits rise as rising interest rates boost revenues.
  • Germany’s second-largest lender booked a net profit of 470 million euros.
  • Analysts had forecast a profit of just under 400 million euros.

Germany’s second-largest lender Commerzbank said Wednesday its profits increased in the second quarter as rising interest rates boosted revenues.

The banking group booked a net profit of 470 million euros ($478 million) for the period between April and June, above the expectations of analysts surveyed by FactSet who forecast a figure just under 400 million euros.

Commerzbank made a net loss of 527 million euros in the same period last year, a figure pulled down by a 500-million-euro restructuring charge.

Revenues at Commerzbank rose to 2.4 billion euros in the second quarter, up 30 percent on a year.

The improvement was driven by “strong customer business and rising interest rates”, Commerzbank said in a statement.

Central banks have been raising interest rates to fight soaring inflation, with the European Central Bank hiking its rates for the first time in over a decade at the end of July.

The increase in revenues was “above our expectations”, Commerzbank CEO Manfred Knof said in a statement.

Since Moscow’s invasion of Ukraine in February, Commerzbank had reduced its net exposure to Russia by 45 percent to one billion euros.

As of the end of June, Commerzbank had made a total of 564 million euros in risk provisions to guard against further fallout from the conflict and “secondary effects such as the interruption of supply chains or high energy prices”.

The bank stuck to its outlook for the year, which saw revenues rising year-on-year on the back of higher interest rates.

The outlook did not take account of the risk of “severe deterioration of the economic environment, for instance due to a natural gas shortage”.

Russia has dwindled supplies of the fuel to Europe amid tensions over the West’s support for Ukraine.

UK clears Norton’s $8 bn Avast cyber security takeover

Norton's $8 bn Avast cyber security takeover
  • UK regulators give a provisional nod to NortonLifeLock’s $8-billion purchase of Czech rival Avast.
  • Competition watchdog had opened an in-depth probe after warning deal risked harming competition.
  • Avast’s London shares surged 42.41 percent on Wednesday, giving Avast a market value of about $8.5 billion.

UK regulators on Wednesday gave the provisional nod to US cyber security giant NortonLifeLock’s $8-billion purchase of Czech rival Avast, whose London shares surged more than 40 percent in reaction.

The Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) watchdog had opened an in-depth probe after warning in March that the deal risked harming competition.

However, the CMA concluded in initial findings published on Wednesday that this was not the case.

“Millions of people across the UK rely on cyber safety services to keep them safe online,” said Kirstin Baker, chair of the CMA inquiry group, in a statement.

“After gathering further information from the companies involved and other industry players, we are currently satisfied that this deal won’t worsen the options available to consumers.”

She added that the CMA has therefore “provisionally concluded that the deal can go ahead”.

In reaction, Avast’s London stock surged 42.41 percent to 680.60 pence on the British capital’s falling market.

That gave Avast a stock market capitalisation of about $8.5 billion.

The regulator found both businesses “face significant competition”, particularly from main rival McAfee but also from smaller suppliers.

In addition, Microsoft’s built-in security applications on its Windows operating system provided “increasingly important alternatives” for consumers.

NortonLifeLock said it “welcomed” the news, adding in a separate statement that it hoped to complete the deal by September 12, pending final CMA approval.

The pair had announced the blockbuster takeover last year to create a leading consumer business as internet activity boomed during the pandemic.

Prince William “firewall” against Prince Harry, Meghan Markle

Prince Harry
  • Prince William is said to have taken over the reigns of the British royal family.
  • He has been acting as a buffer against Prince Harry’s alleged attacks on the Firm.
  • This was stated by royal author Tom Bower in a recent interview with the Palace Confidential podcast.

Prince William is said to have taken over the helm from Queen Elizabeth and has been acting as a buffer against Prince Harry’s alleged attacks on the Firm.

This was stated by royal author Tom Bower during a recent interview with the Palace Confidential podcast.

He was quoted as, “I think for example the announcement that William is going to deliver a speech on the environment in Boston is a very clever move.”

“It shows the real royals instead of the Montecito royals I think they handled the whole Jubilee visit with Meghan and Harry very well.”

“They controlled it and made sure there was no damaging fallout. I think the Queen will be pleased that her son and grandson are rescuing and repairing the problem.”

German exports rise again despite slowdown fears

German exports rise
  • Germany exported $136.8 billion worth of goods in June, 4.5 percent more than in May.
  • The closely watched export indicator was 18.4 percent higher than in June last year.
  • Germany’s economy stagnated between April and June registering a growth of zero percent.

German exports increased for the third month in a row, data published Wednesday showed, despite fears that Europe’s largest economy could soon pitch into recession.

Germany exported 134.3 billion euros ($136.8 billion) worth of goods in June, 4.5 percent more than in May, according to seasonally adjusted figures from the federal statistics agency Destatis.

The closely watched indicator was 18.4 percent higher than in June last year.

Germany’s trade balance remained positive at 6.4 billion euros, with the total value of goods imported in June sitting at 127.9 billion euros.

Exports to EU countries were rose by 3.9 percent from May, while those to other countries rose by 5.3 percent.

Exports to Russia increased by 14.5 percent between May and June, albeit from a relatively low base.

The export figure for June was 40.3 percent below its level in 2021 with trade collapsing after Western countries slapped tariffs on Russia for its invasion of Ukraine in February.

Despite the overall improvement, businesses have reported pessimism about the outlook for the Germany’s export-driven economy.

A survey published by the German Ifo Institute last week showed their export expectations had dropped.

The darkening business climate also suggested that Germany was “on the cusp of a recession”, said think-tank president Clemens Fuest.

The German economy stagnated between April and June, registering growth of zero percent, according to official figures published last week.

Will Prince William, Kate celebrate Meghan Markle’s 41st birthday?

41st birthday
  • Meghan Markle will celebrate her 41st birthday on August 4.
  • Royal expert claims that members of the royal family are not required to wish her a happy birthday.
  • The Firm may send birthday greetings, but only “through gritted teeth,” Phil Dampier says.

Meghan Markle, Duchess of Sussex, will celebrate her 41st birthday in California on August 4 with her husband Prince Harry and their children, son Archie and daughter Lilibet.

Fans and friends are expected to send sweet birthday greetings to the former Suits actress.

Royal expert Phil Dampier, on the other hand, claims that members of the royal family are not required to wish Meghan a happy birthday.

According to the royal expert, Meghan may receive birthday greetings from the royal family, but only “through gritted teeth.”

Last year, members of the royal family sent birthday greetings to Meghan in order to avoid further public backlash for The Firm, according to the royal author.

Dampier stated, “I think it is likely they will send a public message through gritted teeth.”

“I think Charles, the Queen, and William and Kate don’t want to make the situation worse by having a public slanging match with them, but privately I think they are very upset by how things have turned out.”

Meghan Markle has been chastised for her desperate need for, “constant courtship” and “renewed honeymoon periods.”

In her most recent interview with Express UK, astrologer Jessica Adams made this observation.

She began by confessing, “She can never be alone for long and thrives on duets, but also on duels.”

“It suits her nature to have herself and Harry against the world; it actually strengthens the marriage.”

From March 2027 to April 2035, her relationship with Harry will be put to the ultimate test.

“It’s a variation of a seven-year itch and takes seven or eight years of willpower if they’re going to make it.”

Meghan was “born for courtship and needs a constantly renewed honeymoon period – all the time.”
