Patience a virtue for Springsteen’s run to glory days

Springsteen
  • Jessica Springsteen is the daughter of Bruce Springsteen and Olympic silver medallist show jumper.
  • The 31-year-old admits that at times she feared she would never make it in showjumping.
  • ‘The Boss’ made a surprise appearance at Glastonbury Festival supporting Paul McCartney.

Jessica Springsteen has made a success out of a career that could not be further removed from that of her rock legend father Bruce and yet the Olympic silver medallist show jumper told AFP that at times she feared she would never make it.

Last weekend highlighted the difference in their respective worlds.

At about the same time on Saturday, Jessica, 31, competed in the Grand Prix at the Longines Paris Eiffel Jumping event, to the stunning backdrop of the Eiffel Tower, while ‘The Boss’ was making a surprise appearance at the Glastonbury Festival supporting fellow legend Paul McCartney.

She had a busy weekend competing in at least six competitions on her two horses RMF Zecilie and Hungry Heart, the latter a name that will resonate with her father’s fans.

Springsteen, though, has been very much the author of her successful career in showjumping — a rare sport where men and women compete on an equal basis — reaching the zenith thusfar with the silver in the team competition at the Olympics last year in Tokyo.

That came at the third time of asking as in 2012 in London she was an alternate rider for the team and then missed out on the 2016 Games.

However, having battled her way to the top she knows that it is a sport which has many pitfalls.

“The sport is always challenging, there are always ups and downs and you really have to stick with it,” she told AFP.

“There have been many moments where I felt like my aspirations of making a championship team were so far away and that I would never get there.

“It’s so important to trust the process and stay determined and be patient.

“It is definitely not easy, but there’s no better feeling than when it all comes together.”

She certainly had a rude introduction to riding aged six as her first pony tried to gain the upper hand.

“Yes, my first pony Shamrock would always spin and buck and was quite cheeky,” she said.

“I think I learned a lot from every horse I have ridden. My first pony definitely taught me resilience!”

‘Strong mindset’

Springsteen admits it took a while for her to gain the confidence required for the stiff challenge of guiding a powerful horse round an arena packed with obstacles to jump.

“I was quite nervous when I was younger, and it took me a lot of time to become comfortable even jumping,” she said.

“Since I started so young, I really took my time at every level and waited to start jumping bigger fences until I felt really confident, which I think was important for me.

“Every time I moved up to new divisions, I was really excited and eager.”

At 31 Springsteen would be in many sports entering the final stages of her career but as Nick Skelton showed when winning Olympic individual gold aged 58 showjumping is ageless.

Springsteen, though, says a big reason for the longevity of so many riders in the sport is down to their love of horses and adapting to their different demands.

“It’s all about the relationship you have with your horse — every horse has a different style and certain type of ride they prefer,” she said.

“It’s not about how physically strong you are, it’s about being sensitive to your horse and figuring out what makes them jump their best.

“Being able to work with them every day is truly a dream for me.

“And I feel really grateful that I compete in a sport that you can do for many many years, that’s really rare.”

This battle between horse and rider in establishing relationships has been helped in Springsteen’s case by her having studied psychology.

“I’ve continued to read sports psychology books as well which I find really helpful,” she said.

“I think having a strong mindset is so important.

“If I wasn’t riding, yes perhaps I would have continued studying psychology and doing something in that field!”

Barcelona sell 10% of Liga TV rights to US fund

Barcelona
  • Barcelona sell 10 percent of their Liga television rights for 25 years to U.S. investment group Sixth Street.
  • The deal will allow Barcelona to end their fiscal year in profit.
  • Last year, Barcelona had debts of 1.35 billion euros ($1.6 billion).

Barcelona on Thursday announced they had sold 10 percent of their Liga television rights for 25 years to U.S. investment group Sixth Street for 207.5 million euros ($215.5 million).

“Sixth Street will initially invest EUR207.5 million and in return will receive 10% of the Club’s LaLiga TV rights for the next 25 years,” Barca said in a statement.

The deal will allow Barcelona, beset by financial problems, to end the fiscal year that closes this Thursday in profit.

An international sports news publication reported that otherwise Barca “would have ended the financial year with a loss of 150 million euros.”

“With this transaction, FC Barcelona generates a total capital gain of EUR267 million for the current season,” said the club statement.

Barcelona, along with Real Madrid and Athletic Bilbao, opted out of a deal in January with another American fund, CVC, to buy between 8 and 11 per cent of the broadcasting and commercial rights for the top two Spanish divisions for 50 years.

In May, Real agreed a deal with Sixth Street and Legends which it called “a premium experiences company for sports and live venue organisations,” for 30 percent of revenue at the Bernabeu Stadium, which is being redeveloped, for 20 years for 360m euros.

Last August, Joan Laporta, who returned as Barcelona president the previous November, said an audit had uncovered total club debts of 1.35 billion euros.

The club had let Lionel Messi leave last June saying they could not afford to keep him even at a reduced salary.

On Thursday, Laporta welcomed his club’s deal in a statement.

“We are activating economic levers and executing on our patient, sustainable, and efficient strategy to strengthen the club’s financial footing,” he said.

Sixth Street CEO Alan Waxman, was also quoted in the statement.

“We believe in the strategy Joan Laporta and FC Barcelona are implementing and are proud that one of the most celebrated clubs in football has chosen us to be its partner and capital solutions provider,” Waxman said.

The sale of television rights was one of two “levers” approved last week by a meeting of club members to raise revenue quickly so Barcelona could make signings for the coming season.

The assembly authorised the transfer of up to 25 percent of the television rights income for up to 25 years, which means that Laporta can still seek a buyer for the remaining 15 percent.

The members also approved the sale of 49.9 percent of its licencing and merchandising division, BLM.

“We will once again have positive funds,” Laporta told the members when he asked them to vote for the measures.

“We will repay our debt in a reasonable way and we will be able to make the necessary investments to make our teams more competitive.”

Xiaomi 12S Ultra replaces the 12 Ultra

Xiaomi 12S Ultra
  • Xiaomi co-founder Lei Jun says the 12 Ultra was scrapped in favor of the 12S Ultra.
  • The phone will have a brand-new Sony IMX989 1-inch camera sensor.
  • It will reportedly have a 50MP resolution with 1.15m pixels.

In the end, Xiaomi won’t ever release the Xiaomi 12 Ultra. The phone might no longer serve as the organization’s upcoming flagship model.

Lei Jun, a co-founder of Xiaomi, has revealed that the rumoured Xiaomi Mi 11 Ultra replacement has been scrapped.

He disclosed that the phone was initially slated to launch earlier this year, but the business opted to abandon the plan in order to concentrate on enhancing the user experience.

In answer to a fan’s inquiry on the distinction between the impending Xiaomi 12S Ultra and the 12 Ultra on Weido, he provided the confirmation.

The Snapdragon 8, which was previously scheduled to launch in March and April but was postponed, is included in the Xiaomi Mi 12 Ultra, according to Jun.

“We updated [to a] Snapdragon 8+ in search of a better experience, and Qualcomm and Leica continued to train for several months.”

There is a positive aspect to the cancellation, though. The 12 Ultra was discontinued by Xiaomi in favour of the 12S Ultra, as Jun’s comment demonstrates.

Thanks to its collaboration with Sony, Xiaomi revealed an important camera upgrade for the 12S Ultra yesterday.

The phone will have a brand-new Sony IMX989 1-inch camera sensor. The sensor is praised for its improved dynamic range, increased light sensitivity, and quick focus time.

The phone’s camera will reportedly have a 50MP resolution with 1.15m pixels, giving it an advantage over some of the top Android phones, however the resolution is still unknown.

This is in addition to Xiaomi’s current partnership with Leica. For its upcoming flagship device, Xiaomi agreed into a “long-term strategic cooperation” with the German photography juggernaut in May.

Recent rumors said that the phone would use a Snapdragon 8 Plus Gen 1 SoC and 120W quick charging.

A 120Hz screen refresh rate, 8GB or 12GB of RAM, and up to 256GB of internal storage are also reportedly included.

On July 4, Xiaomi will announce its newest high-end device, so by then we’ll probably know what happened to the Xiaomi 12 Ultra.

Putin denies Russia’s role in looming global food crisis

global food crisis
  • Ukraine is a major exporter of grain, particularly corn and wheat.
  • Its production has been stifled by Moscow’s military offensive, causing prices to skyrocket.
  • Russia cannot sell its crops and fertilizers internationally because of Western sanctions.

President Vladimir Putin denied Thursday that Russia was to blame for a looming global food crisis caused by the Ukraine conflict.

Ukraine, a major exporter of grain, particularly corn and wheat, has seen its production stifled as a result of Moscow’s military offensive, causing prices to skyrocket and fears of food shortages, which will disproportionately affect the poorest countries.

“We have not put any restrictions on the export of fertilizers, nor on the export of food products,” Putin said as he welcomed Indonesian leader Joko Widodo, whose country holds the G20 presidency, to the Kremlin.

Moscow does “not hinder the export of Ukrainian wheat,” Putin said, adding that Russia is “in constant contact” with the UN agency in charge of the issue.

Putin instead blamed Western sanctions imposed on Russia. He said that by targeting the owners of fertilizer companies, Western sanctions have “created conditions that made it much more difficult” to deliver certain products internationally.

Moscow says it would allow Ukrainian ships loaded with food products to leave if the Ukrainian military demined its ports, an option rejected by Kyiv, which fears for the safety of its Black Sea coast.
