US ‘deeply concerned’ by missing Chinese tennis star

US 'deeply concerned' by missing Chinese tennis star

WASHINGTON: The United States is “deeply concerned” about Chinese tennis star Peng Shuai, who went missing after making sexual assault allegations against a top Communist Party official, the White House said Friday.

Press Secretary Jen Psaki said President Joe Biden’s administration wants China to “provide independent, verifiable proof” of her whereabouts.

The US call came as international concern mounts for the tennis star, missing since alleging earlier this month that she was sexually exploited by a former vice-premier of China.

The United Nations on Friday insisted on a fully transparent investigation into the claims made by Peng, formerly the world’s top-ranked doubles player, against Communist Party grandee Zhang Gaoli.

Tennis stars, sports bodies and governments and human rights defenders have also spoken up for Peng, 35, and demanded information.

The head of the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) said he was prepared to cut lucrative business ties with China if Peng remains unaccounted for and her sexual assault allegations are not probed.

Serena Williams, Novak Djokovic and Naomi Osaka have also voiced their concerns for one of China’s greatest ever players.

France vows not to ‘abandon’ fishermen in UK dispute

France vows not to 'abandon' fishermen in UK dispute

PARIS: French President Emmanuel Macron insisted Friday that he would not “abandon” fishermen demanding post-Brexit licences for waters off the Channel island of Jersey, escalating a battle of words that could spiral into a trade war.

“We are going to continue to fight, we will not abandon our fishermen,” Macron told journalists during a visit to northern France.

He called on the European Commission to step up its efforts to pressure Jersey, a British crown dependency, to honour what France says are the terms of the post-Brexit trade accord with the bloc.

“The Commission must protect us. It has to see this through, but it’s moving too slowly, too weakly,” Macron said, adding that “if the Commission doesn’t play its part, France will do it.”

“I refuse returning to a bilateral discussion,” he added, because “this isn’t a question for France and the British, but a question of respecting your word.”

Asked for comment, an EU spokeswoman in Brussels acknowledged that despite some progress on license requests, “the process is still too slow.”

She said the commission would request “an intensification of this process” as a “matter of urgency” as the first anniversary of the post-Brexit Trade and Cooperation Agreement looms in December.

– ‘All options’ –

Paris has already threatened to ban British boats from unloading their catches at French ports and to subject all British imports to inspections, severely crimping trade.

Officials have also warned that electricity supplies to Jersey, which relies on power from the French mainland, could be restricted or cost more.

At stake are dozens of licenses sought by French fishermen who say Jersey has imposed onerous new requirements, including proof that boats were already plying Jersey waters for years before Britain’s exit from the EU in January.

Many ships are struggling to comply, and accuse Jersey of deliberating trying to exclude them.

On top of outstanding requests, Jersey has granted only temporary licences while talks with France continue, but Paris insists these must be made permanent.

“In total it involves 150 to 200 licences. That remains our demand,” France’s Europe Minister Clement Beaune said, adding that “We are keeping all options on the table if a dialogue doesn’t bear fruit.”

– ‘Time for action’ –

The comments came after French fishing representatives reacted furiously to a proposal to spend millions of euros to compensate the scrapping of boats no longer able to ply Jersey waters.

The offer was seen as preparing for capitulation in the fight with Britain, especially since fellow EU countries have largely remained silent on the fishing dispute.

“People are talking more about the Irish protocol (over the future Ireland/Northern Ireland border) than the fishing question,” said Eric Maurice, a political analyst at the Robert Schuman Foundation in Brussels.

“Everyone realises in Brussels and in member states that the larger question is the respect of the Brexit accords by the British,” he said, “and every knows very well that we’re dealing with a partner who does not always honour his word.”

Paris could also be hoping to settle the fishing dispute in the few weeks that remain before it takes over the rotating presidency of the EU in January — when it will have to take charge of all post-Brexit disputes.

But French fishing representatives, as well as regional officials along the Channel coast, say they are losing patience.

In May, dozens of boats massed at the main port of Jersey to protest, prompting a standoff that saw both France and Britain to dispatch military vessels.

“The time for action has come,” Jean-Luc Hall, director of the French fishing commitee, told AFP.

“Fishermen are considering a new mobilisation in the coming days to defend their fair and legitimate demands,” his committee said in a statement.

World’s poorest countries deprived of COVID-19 vaccines: media

World's poorest countries deprived of COVID-19 vaccines: media

SINGAPORE: Pfizer, BioNTech and Moderna are making combined profits of 65,000 U.S. dollars every minute from their COVID-19 vaccines while the world’s poorest countries remain largely unvaccinated, local media cited AFP as reporting.

The companies have sold the vast majority of their doses to rich countries, leaving low-income nations in the lurch, said the People’s Vaccine Alliance (PVA), a coalition campaigning for wider access to COVID-19 vaccines, Singapore’s Chinese language newspaper Lianhe Zaobao reported.

The alliance estimates that the trio will make pre-tax profits of 34 billion dollars this year, which is equal to 65,000 dollars a minute.

“It is obscene that just a few companies are making millions of dollars in profit every single hour, while just 2 per cent of people in low-income countries have been fully vaccinated against the coronavirus,” the report quoted Maaza Seyoum of the African Alliance and People’s Vaccine Alliance Africa as saying.

Pfizer and BioNTech have delivered less than 1 percent of their total supplies to low-income countries while Moderna has delivered just 0.2 percent, the PVA said.

Dutch ban New Year fireworks as Covid cases surge

Dutch ban New Year fireworks as Covid cases surge

The Dutch government on Friday outlawed traditional fireworks over New Year for a second year in a row, as hospital workers battle a record surge of Covid-19 infections.

New Year’s celebrations in the Netherlands are notoriously wild, with people setting off tens of millions of euros worth of fireworks in back gardens and streets, often causing injuries.

That threatens to clash with a new surge in coronavirus infections, with some 21,000 new cases reported in the last 24 hours — the highest since the start of the pandemic.

Just like last year, the sale and lighting of fireworks will be banned,” the Dutch government said in a statement.

“This to prevent an extra burden on care workers, enforcers and paramedics as much as possible,” the statement said.

Dutch Health Minister Hugo de Jonge said “the number of coronavirus patients are rapidly increasing.”

“We must do everything we can to relieve the pressure. Healthcare is already busy,” he said in a tweet.

The Netherlands last week announced a partial lockdown targeting shops, restaurants, bars and sports clubs as cases rocketed, the first to do so in Western Europe.

More than 12.6 million people in the country of 17.5 million have now been vaccinated, but concerns are mounting that the virus was now spreading among children younger than the current vaccination age of 12 years.

Bars, restaurants, cafes and supermarkets will have to shut at 8 pm for the next three weeks from Saturday, while non-essential shops must shut at 6 pm.

Last year Dutch Justice Minister Ferd Grapperhaus said anyone breaching the ban would be liable for a 100 euro ($118) fine and a criminal record. It was unclear whether the same fines will apply for this year.

Although fireworks have been set off for centuries in the Netherlands, it has been particularly popular at New Year’s since the 1950s.

The Dutch fondness for fireworks turns streets to battlefields as rival groups of revellers fire them at each other, flooding emergency wards with people with burn injuries of missing limbs.

At the end of 2019, more than 1,300 people had to be treated for fireworks-related injuries.

“Just like last year, fireworks sellers will receive appropriate compensation,” the government said.

6 sentenced to jail after leopards escape safari park in east China

6 sentenced to jail after leopards escape safari park in east China

HANGZHOU: A court in east China’s Zhejiang Province Friday sentenced six people, including the legal representative of the Hangzhou Safari Park, to prison terms after three leopards had escaped from the park in April.

The People’s Court of Fuyang District, Hangzhou City, handed down jail terms ranging from one year and two months to two years with a suspension of the sentences.

According to the court ruling, Ding Zengquan and two other feeders of the park had breached safety regulations that resulted in the leopards fleeing the park between the afternoon of April 18 and the morning of April 19.

After the incident, management of the company, including its legal representative Zhang dequan, decided to cover up the truth to avoid economic losses and reputational damage. They launched a hunt for the leopards secretly, capturing one on April 21.

They did not admit the incident until the local public security and forestry departments received reports from the public on the night of May 7. Another leopard was found on May 8, while one continues to be at large to date.

All the defendants violated relevant safety regulations resulting in serious consequences, thus committing a crime of causing a major-liability accident, noted the court verdict.

It added that since the defendants have surrendered themselves and voluntarily pleaded guilty and accepted fines, so they were given a lighter punishment according to law.

UK drivers to face tough new laws over cellphone use in vehicles

UK drivers to face tough new laws over cellphone use in vehicles

LONDON: Drivers in Britain are to face fines and a risk to their driving licenses under stricter controls over the use of cellphones in their vehicles, the British Department for Transport (DfT) announced Friday.

While it is already illegal in Britain to text or make a phone call using a hand-held device while driving, the new laws, which will come into operation in 2022, will go further to ban drivers from using cellphones to take photos or videos, scroll through playlists or play games.

It will also outlaw the use of hand-held devices when vehicles are stopped at traffic lights or held up in a queue on a gridlocked motorway.

Offenders will face a 200-pound (269-U.S. dollar) fixed penalty notice and have 6 points on their driving license, risking a ban under a points totting-up system.

The tougher rules follow a public consultation that found 81 percent of respondents supported proposals to strengthen the law and make it easier for culprits to be prosecuted.

A study published Friday by the DfT revealed younger motorists are more likely to have used a handheld device while driving.

A poll conducted for the DfT by Ipsos MORI found around two thirds of 16-24 year olds used their cellphones in hand while stationary in traffic or at traffic lights, and about six in ten used their phones while moving in traffic.

Transport Secretary Grant Shapps said: “Too many deaths and injuries occur while mobile phones are being held. By making it easier to prosecute people illegally using their phone at the wheel, we are ensuring the law is brought into the 21st century.”
