2.5mn doses Of US Moderna COVID Vaccine Arrived In Islamabad

Moderna vaccine doses arrived in Islamabad

Pakistan has on Friday received 2.5mn doses of COVID vaccine Moderna under COVAX, donated by the United States (US).

A special consignment of COVID-19 Moderna vaccine doses from the US has arrived at Islamabad International Airport today.

“These vaccines will save lives and help Pakistan emerge from this crisis, which has devastated so many families and communities in both our countries. A vaccinated public will also help bring back the economic and social interactions we all welcome,” said CDA Aggeler.

In addition to today’s vaccine donation, the US has delivered nearly $50 million in COVID assistance through our partnership with the government of Pakistan. Since the start of the pandemic, we have worked together to improve lab testing, disease monitoring, and patient care.

Note that Pakistan has so far received 100,000 doses of the Pfizer vaccine through the COVAX facility and also made an agreement to procure 13 million doses of the COVID-19 vaccine from Pfizer.

Earlier, more than 600 diplomats from 57 countries have been vaccinated at the National Institutes of Health (NIH).

An agreement had been signed between Pfizer Pakistan and the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) to supply 13 million Pfizer-BioNTech (BNT 162B2) vaccines.

Asif Zardari Taken To Hospital After His Health Deteriorates

Zardari taken to hospital

Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) co-chairman Asif Ali Zardari has been moved to a hospital after his health deteriorated, sources informed.

Sources added that Asif Ali Zardari was taken to hospital on the advice of his doctors.

Hearing the news about the illness of the father, Pakistan People’s Party Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari and his sister Bakhtwar Bhutto have landed in Karachi from Islamabad and Dubai respectively, said sources.

Earlier this year, the former president was discharged from the hospital after an improvement in his health.

PPP co-chairman was shifted to the hospital on the complaint of chest pain.

Doctors had allowed the former president of Pakistan to leave the hospital as they were satisfied with his latest health reports, the sources had said, adding that the physicians instructed Zardari to avoid meeting people.

Last year, the court had rejected a petition filed by Zardari, who has been put in jail on judicial remand, seeking his shift to a hospital for medical care.

The court had remarked that the court doesn’t have jurisdiction over the matter, and it should be referred to the relevant forum.

Zardari’s advocate Latif Khosa had argued before the court that his client’s life was in danger and it was his Constitutional right to avail medical facilities in the jail.

“A medical board had recommended shifting Zardari to Pims for getting medical care and these people took him to the hospital just for a day and shifted him back to the jail on the very next day,” he had further argued before the court.

Sindh High Court Directs PTA To Restore TikTok In Pakistan

TikTok outage today: video-sharing app goes down for several hours

The Sindh High Court (SHC) on Friday announced to lift the ban from TikTok, one of the most popular video-sharing applications globally.

According to the details, the SHC reverses the decision on banning TikTok and directed the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) to restore the application.

The court, however, has directed the PTA to expedite the disposal of LGBT related applications.

Moreover, the PTA has promised to dispose of the complaints by July 5.

On Thursday, Tiktok issued a response message to the Sindh High Court’s (SHC) order to ban the app across Pakistan.

Earlier this week, the SHC ordered to suspend the video-sharing app TikTok across the country over immoral and objectionable content.

“The creativity and passion of our community has brought joy to households across Pakistan and provided a home for incredibly talented creators,” said TikTok in a statement.

“We have grown our local-language moderation capacity for Pakistan, and work diligently to review and take action on content in violation of our Community Guidelines,” it added.

“We continue to work with regulators, and look forward to serving the millions of TikTok users and creators in Pakistan who have found a home for creativity, fun and vital economic opportunities for many years to come,” the statement by TikTok concluded.

Ban Lifted For The Second Time

Back in April, Pakistan, for the second time, had removed a ban on TikTok consequent to a local high court’s order.

This was done almost a month after the same judicature had directed PTA to “immediately block access” of the TikTok service.

However, PTA had also issued a strict warning to TikTok against “vulgar and objectionable content”, which it was told to remove.

The authority said in a press release shared on Twitter, “PTA has issued directions to the service providers to unblock access to the TikTok App.”

It also warned, “the TikTok App management has been told to ensure that vulgar and objectionable content are to be made inaccessible in accordance with the PECA provisions and directions of the Honorable Court.”

PHC Chief Justice Qaiser Rashid Khan had stated to the PTA’s director-general that the body should have a system that could differentiate between “good and bad”.

Justice Qaiser had said, “When PTA takes action [against immoral content], people will not upload such videos,” to which the latter said the authority had spoken to TikTok to block repeat offenders.

TikTok Planning To extend the video length to 3 minutes, Up From 60 Seconds

TikTok exceeds video limit to 3 minutes

The popular video-sharing platform TikTok has announced to roll out a new feature that will help the users to publish videos up to three minutes in length.

TikTok is rolling out the ability for everyone to post videos up to three minutes in length, three times the existing one-minute limit.

It has tripled the prior cap to stay ahead of competitors. The digital platform is believed to have one billion users worldwide, including more than 100 million in the US.

The app management aims to give creators more flexibility while filming and limiting the need for multi-part posts.

Three-minute videos have been on trial since December. Longer videos were limited to select users, though, but they’ll now be rolling out to everyone on TikTok “over the coming weeks.”

“With longer videos, creators will have the canvas to create new or expanded types of content, with the flexibility of a bit more space,” product manager Drew Kirchhoff said.

“Some of you might have come across a longer video on TikTok already – we’ve been letting creators around the world experiment with the expanded format,” Kirchhoff said.

Owned by China-based ByteDance, TikTok remains one of the world’s most popular social media apps but faces competitors such as YouTube, Triller, and others.

On the other hand, Tiktok has issued a response message to the Sindh High Court’s (SHC) order to ban the app across Pakistan.

Earlier this week, the SHC ordered to suspend the video-sharing app across the country over immoral and objectionable content.

Govt, opposition & valiant armed forces concordant regarding security issues

Parliamentary Committee Session

The in-camera meeting of the Parliamentary Committee session on National Security was held at the Parliament House on Thursday.

The military leadership said Pakistan will welcome a truly representative government in Afghanistan and continue to play a very sincere, positive and responsible role in the Afghan peace process.

Director-General Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) Lt. Gen. Faiz Hameed briefed the parliamentarians for over two hours with a focus on Afghanistan and regional security situations.

Army Chief General Qamar Bajwa also attended the session and responded to questions of the parliamentarians.

The meeting was also attended by some of the leading figures from both the treasury and opposition benches and the provincial chief ministers.

General Qamar Javed Bajwa and Lt. General Faiz Hameed also attended the dinner and met Speaker Asad Qaiser in his chamber prior to the in-camera session.

According to sources, the participants of the meeting decided that another session of the Parliamentary Committee on National Security should be held before Eid to draft recommendations for the government.

“The DG ISI gave a comprehensive briefing to the parliamentarians and political leadership on important external matters, national security, internal challenges and regional development, especially the Kashmir conflict and Afghanistan’s current situation,” a handout issued by the Ministry of Information said.

The meeting was informed that Pakistan had honestly played a very positive and responsible role in the Afghan peace process.

“Owing to Pakistan’s efforts, not only was the path paved for talks between different Afghan factions warring groups but a meaningful dialogue between the United States and Taliban was also started,” the handout said.

The meeting was apprised that Pakistan believed in the fact that lasting peace and stability in Afghanistan would actually result in instability in South Asia.

The DG ISI further said Pakistan’s land was not being used in the conflict going on in Afghanistan and hoped that Afghanistan will reciprocate in this regard.

While leaving the Parliament House, Gen Bajwa said no airbase will be given to the US. “You should have put this question to the government. Why you asked this from me?”

However, when insisted, the COAS said no base would be given to the US.

Israel Carries Out Airstrikes on Gaza in retaliation to inflammable balloons

Israel airstrike on Gaza

Following the latest unrest, Israel has launched new airstrikes on Gaza in reprisal for an incendiary balloon launched from the Palestinian enclave, since a ceasefire ended May’s dispute.

According to security sources, Hamas, the Islamist group that runs Israeli-blockaded Gaza, said the airstrikes by Israel hit training sites. There were no injuries reported.

A statement from Israel’s army said: “In response to the arson balloons fired towards Israeli territory today, (military) fighter jets struck… a weapons manufacturing site belonging to the Hamas terror organisation.”

On Thursday, Israel’s fire service said that flammable balloon launches from Gaza had sparked four minor fires in the southern Eshkol region, on the Gaza border.

The flames were “small and not dangerous” and were quickly brought under control, a statement from the fire service said.

Note that the conflict between Israel and Palestine had killed 260 Palestinians including some fighters.

In Israel, 13 people were killed, including a soldier, by rockets fired from Gaza, the police and army said.

Israel has sustained a crippling blockade on Gaza since 2007, which the Jewish state says is necessary to contain armed groups in the enclave.

“A fire investigator… determined that all the fires were caused by incendiary balloons (from Gaza)”, the statement said.

Eleven days of deadly fighting between Israel and Gaza’s Hamas Islamist rulers stopped on May 21 with a ceasefire declaration.

There was no immediate indication as to which Gaza-based group was responsible for the balloon launch.

Tensions Rise In Jerusalem Since March

The airstrikes on Gaza come as hardline and right-wing extremist Jews marched through a controversial Arab-populated area in East Jerusalem on Tuesday. Since March, there has been a renewed wave of outrage among Palestinian Arabs.

The parade commemorates Israel’s occupation of East Jerusalem during the 1967 Middle East War. On this occasion, hardline nationalist Jews organize a pride parade, which runs through the ancient areas of the city where most Muslims live.

During the march, hundreds of young Jewish people carry Israeli flags through the Muslim population, including at the Damascus Gate. Meanwhile, marchers also sing songs of courage and patriotism of the Israeli army. Yesterday, young Jews participating in the march chanted anti-Arab slogans, which were condemned by the Israeli government.

Israel’s new foreign minister, Yair Lapid, said in a statement that those who chanted racist slogans were “a source of disgrace to the Israeli people.”

“Shouting that everyone is anti-Semitic isn’t a policy or a work plan, even if it sometimes feels right,” he said.
