Power outages continue in Karachi, citizens worried

Karachi power outage

The unannounced and hours-long power outages in Karachi amidst the lockdown situation has added more misery as sweltering heat continues to hit the city.

According to the details, Karachiites are facing an hours-long power outage since last night in different parts of the city. Power was cut off for up to 12 hours. The citizens also had to face a water shortage. They were unable to switch on their water pumping motors.

Frequent power outages in some areas have also led to complaints by several citizens of motorcycles getting burnt.

K-Electric, meanwhile, says that demand and supply have improved and the overall situation is better.

Unannounced load shedding is not carried out in Karachi, K-E said.

Karachi Electronic Dealers Association President Rizwan Irfan said, “If there is electricity, our electric appliance shops will have customers in them,” he said, adding that their shops opened at around 12 noon or 1 pm in the afternoon and they had to close them by 6 pm due to the lockdown orders.

“During the entire six hours of operations, we have at least a four-hour power breakdown. This drops our profits to only 10% to 15% of what we used to earn during this season,” he said.

Massive Power Outage

Earlier, Karachi had faced a massive power outrage as several areas were left without electricity with no respite amidst the hot weather conditions across the city.

According to the official announcement by K-Electric, the power distributor, the Power supply to 25 grid stations had been suspended, leaving most parts of the metropolis without electricity.

The areas that faced the power outage include New Karachi, Saddar, Gulshan-e-Iqbal, Gulistan-e-Jauhar, Buffer Zone, Shadman, Sir Syed Town, Nagan Chowrangi, Federal B Area and North Nazimabad.

In a statement on Twitter, K-Electric, said: “Interruption in power supply are being reported from some parts of the city. We are urgently looking into this.”

Pakistan strongly censures custodial killing of a Kashmiri youth in IIOJK

UN unanimously adopts Pakistan’s resolution on countering disinformation

Pakistan strongly censures the killing of a young Kashmiri Mohammad Amin Malik due to torture by Indian occupation forces in Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK). The young Kashmiri was in illegal custody of the Indian occupation forces.

The Indian occupation army has killed over 50 Kashmiris since January 2021 in fake encounters in the name of so-called “security operations” against innocent Kashmiri civilians. Young men including minor children are murdered in broad daylight using brutal and indiscriminate force.

Arbitrary detentions of Kashmiri youth also continue unabated. In addition, the refusal to return the mortal remains of martyrs for proper burial demonstrates the moral bankruptcy of the Indian government.

The use of brutal force against innocent Kashmiris cannot suppress the struggle for their legitimate right to self-determination.

We once again call upon the international community to hold India accountable for the grave and systematic human rights violations of the Kashmiri people and work for peaceful resolution of the Jammu and Kashmir dispute in accordance with the relevant UNSC resolutions and wishes of the Kashmiri people.

Note that Mohammad Amin Malik was shot dead by the security forces following an overnight encounter, a police official said.

The gunbattle between the surrendered militant and police broke out inside the Special Operations Group (SOG) camp in Tral area.

Malik allegedly snatched the rifle of constable Amjid Khan and shot at him. He was hurt in the incident and immediately taken to the hospital for medical assistance.

The officials said Malik had surrendered before security forces on May 30 along with a .12 bore rifle.

The security forces tried to persuade the militant to surrender on Wednesday and even called his parents to convince him to lay down the arms, the officials said.

However, Malik had refused the offer.

He started firing towards the positions of the security personnel, who retaliated, leading to his death.

Amazon’s Ring Tries To Pacify Users As New Safety Policy Sparked Criticism

Amazon Ring new feature

The world’s most popular technology company Amazon has announced that amidst the new safety policy, its Ring unit will require police and fire departments to request Amazon’s Ring home surveillance videos via public posts on its community safety app, called Neighbors.

Starting next week, public safety agencies interested in accessing Ring videos will have to reach out via a publicly viewable post on Amazon’s Ring app called Neighbors. They were previously able to make such requests privately.

Currently, Ring permits its law enforcement partners to privately message Ring users to access footage from their devices.

But Ring has been stung by criticism over its once-private agreements letting some 600 law enforcement agencies around the country tap into its Neighbors app.

“If you’re an adult walking your dog or a child playing on the sidewalk, you shouldn’t have to worry that Ring’s products are amassing footage of you and that law enforcement may hold that footage indefinitely or share that footage with any third parties,” Sen. Ed Markey told in 2019.

According to a 2019 post, police departments have even reportedly raffled off the devices in some communities with the caveat that recipients of the smart doorbells need to hand over footage when requested.

Moreover, Amazon acquired Ring in February 2018. The company gives an array of smart security devices that allow people to remotely check in on their homes, including video doorbells, floodlights, window and door alarms.

Ring’s smart doorbell is equipped with a security camera that automatically starts recording when it identifies the motion. The user is then notified in the Ring app and they can view the footage.

However, Ring said the new “Request for Assistance” feature will help provide greater transparency into what information law enforcement agencies are requesting.

Users will be able to view a history of data requests made by specific police departments and agencies won’t be able to delete posts from the app.
