ISLAMABAD: United Nations (UN) experts have raised grave concerns over the escalating human rights violations in Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK), issuing a stern warning to India to comply with international human rights obligations.
According to the UN experts, the situation worsened following the Pahalgam incident, where Indian authorities intensified crackdowns resulting in the arrest of nearly 2,800 individuals, including journalists and human rights defenders.
They noted that arbitrary detentions, suspected extrajudicial killings, torture, and discriminatory actions against Muslims remain deeply alarming and unacceptable.
The experts further highlighted growing hate campaigns, harassment against Muslims, and the unlawful deportation of around 1,900 individuals, terming it a violation of global human rights conventions. Several rights activists have reportedly been held for years under stringent security laws without due legal process.
The UN experts urged India to immediately respect international human rights laws, expressing concern over communication blackouts, restrictions on journalistic freedom, and curbs on free expression in the region.
They reiterated that the continued suppression of civil liberties in Kashmir demands urgent international attention.
