ARLINGTON: Japan delivered a resilient and disciplined performance to hold the Netherlands to a 2–2 draw in their World Cup Group F opener on Sunday, staging a determined comeback on two occasions in a tightly contested encounter.
At the Dallas Stadium, the Samurai Blue showed remarkable character after falling behind twice, responding with composure and tactical sharpness to secure a valuable point against a strong Dutch side.
The Netherlands opened the scoring through Virgil van Dijk, who headed home early in the second half after Japan failed to clear a set-piece. Japan, however, responded quickly, with Keito Nakamura restoring parity through a deflected strike following a well-worked attacking move.
The Dutch regained the lead when Crysencio Summerville produced a superb curling finish from the edge of the area, once again putting Ronald Koeman’s side in control of the match.
But Japan refused to surrender. In the 88th minute, Daichi Kamada was credited with the crucial equaliser after a powerful header from Koki Ogawa deflected off him and beat goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen, sealing a dramatic draw.
Japan had started cautiously, with goalkeeper Zion Suzuki making an early save to deny Donyell Malen, before gradually growing into the game and improving their control in possession.
Despite the absence of key midfielder Wataru Endo, ruled out due to injury, Japan maintained their structure, intensity and defensive organisation throughout the match.
Coach Hajime Moriyasu praised his side’s unity and composure under pressure, while Netherlands coach Ronald Koeman expressed disappointment at failing to protect their lead on two occasions, despite acknowledging Japan’s strong resistance.
The result leaves both teams sharing points in Group F after a fiercely competitive opening fixture.
