The Government of Azad Kashmir has declared Wednesday, October 8, 2025, as a public holiday to mark “Youm-e-Istehqaq,” a day dedicated to remembering the martyrs and victims of the 2005 earthquake.

The Azad Kashmir Services and General Administration Department issued an official notification announcing the holiday. As per the announcement, all government and private educational institutions will remain closed, and government offices will also observe a general holiday across the region.

October 8 is observed every year to pay tribute to those who lost their lives in the devastating earthquake and to remind people of the strength and unity shown by the residents of Azad Kashmir. Various events and activities will be held throughout the region to honor the victims and promote awareness about disaster preparedness and community support.

The earthquake of October 8, 2005, was one of the darkest moments in Pakistan’s history. It measured 7.6 on the Richter scale and struck northern Pakistan near Muzaffarabad in Azad Jammu and Kashmir, killing around 86,000 people, injuring thousands more, and leaving over 3.5 million homeless.

The cities of Muzaffarabad, Balakot, and Bagh were almost completely destroyed, with around 780,000 buildings and many healthcare facilities severely damaged. Each year, Pakistan observes this day to remember the victims and recognize the resilience of the affected communities.
